I picture the Bakluni pantheon as relatively small... it certainly draws more from the pre-Islam Arabic & the Muslim systems than it does the Sumero/Akkadian/Babylonian systems. These had simple deities; in the former case, the earth, sun, moon, Venus, and water and in the latter, a "law-giver" and his prophets.

The gods I've added are all pre-islamic gods of the Turks. I haven't customized them yet.

"Al' Akbar" is simply a contracting of the phrase" "Allah ak bar"...

In pre-Islamic days, Allah was also the name of the head god of some polytheistic Arab tribes.

Originally I used a more Arabic model for the Baklunish, but eventually moved to the Turkic view. There were just too many similarities with the steppe wandering tribes and the Baklunish kingdom that resembled the Ottoman Empire or Ottoman Caliphate.

I have tossed around the idea of a Genghis Khan type Paynim leader who sweeps into the Flanaess from the west with his Golden Hoard.

Honestly? Back in the day I had used that section as an Egyptian dump to run lost mummy shit (as I played through the "Pharaoh" series the year before I had adopted World of Greyhawk) some players kept pining for the novelty of the pyramids so I made all kinds of neo-Egyptian shit. I illustrated the Baklunish rulers a quasi-Egyptian as well. They do have a pinch of Medieval Middle Eastern with some more than others. In the 90's, I had an invading ancient pharaoh with a flying pyramid from the Baklunish lands as well.

I'll think about a Baklunish deity tonight and try to give it a whirl. I should really get back to the Oerids as well (I forgot about those). I see the old Oerid pantheon as close to the Teutonic version of the Norse pantheon in feel.

In pre-Islamic days, Allah was also the name of the head god of some polytheistic Arab tribes. Well, this is based on an unproven concept that "Allah" which mean "THE God" came from "Al' ilah" which referred to a moon god. In the Qabaah in Mecca are said to be the statues of 360 deities from earlier times that are now regarded as merely earlier prophets; but among these are idols to Abraham and Jesus, as well as some such as Yu'raq who were only worshipped in a single locality. The "meat" of the old Arabic pantheon consisted in the main of about ten deities. The Paynims resemble the Turks somewhat, but rememmber that Gary was mostly influenced by "1001 Arabian Nights" when he came up with this region, as well as a sprinkling from the various "Color Fairy" books. As to Genghis Khan, he would have been in the" Kara Tur region " (Gary called it 'Suhfang') far to the west, probably across the western ocean.

Speaking of Arabian crap, I was just watching (about a half hour ago) the Boomerang channel and they had the first episode of the BANANA SPLITS from 1969 ( which was bunch of actors in animal costume interspersed with shorts of various cartoons and live action). Blah, blah, blah..get to the point! Anyway the cartoon was the first episode of "ARABIAN KNIGHTS". Anybody remember this? The conjurer: Ro-ban ko-bar!!! The shapeshifter: Size of an elephant! You know I'm going to be saying this for five weeks now.

The other short was live action called Danger Island with savages painted with skeletons. Now while I've seen the Splits and the Arabian Nights on the Boomerang channel from time to time throughout the years that I haven't seen since it was on. Reminds me of playing GI Joe and Matchbox men.

Sorry for the digression. I thought about names for gods, I only managed one good one: Hasor the Mariner From smudging together a Phoenician and Mesopotamian to make a later Arabic era sounding deity. I came up with an Arabic sounding "Thoth" based on an earlier name smudged together and it wasn't until today that I realized how awful it sounded: Tawwat Boy, I gotta stop staying up so late!

Hasor is cool. Tawwat needs work. How about Talwat?

I studied Arabic for a while, but it was a Lebanese Christian dialect, so it was very Allah-lite.

Here's my thoguht process on that: I was aiming for a combo name/idea of "Thoth" and the Phoenician "Taautus" then putting an Arabic zip on it sounding like the Egyptian antiquities guy thats always on the news "Hawwaz". Ending with what I thought was an ideal name for some sort of magic/knowledge god "Tawwat" because you can generate the sound from pronouncing the two source names.

Speaking of Ancient Mesopotamian; there was an old tablet that traced the lineage of gods that predated Moses that had a certain "YWH" listed as a grandson of Anu... Hmmmm... ^__^

Hmmmm... ^__^ Yes, I believe that he's also represented in the Canaanite mythos as well but its bad taste to bring that into the fore. I think all that should be ignored or we're going against the GH grain.
