Ernie stated it in the Marmoreal Tomb discussion at the last Gary Con, but like a fool I did not write it down. He may have been paraphrasing from memory, himself, though. I asked him if he would ever play Tenser again or consider guest appearances. He said he would not, except possibly for a charity event, and that he was too protective of his old characters to play them very much anymore. Ernie said when he plays a character, he really gets into it, and that character is himself. That is why Tenser chickened out of the Tomb of Horrors. On one of Tenser's first adventures into the Dungeons of Castle Greyhawk he was first level and memorized the read magic spell. He asked rhetorically: who would ever take read magic as their spell into a dungeon nowadays? But he came upon an arch in the dungeon and could not read it, so he cast read magic on it. That is when he saw the motto about the dungeon challenges and rewards being greater the deeper you go.
