This year it's Paris. For three weeks in late September through early October, I'll have an apartment in the 1st Arrondissement. I'll be staying on the rue Saint-Honoré about fifteen minutes walk from The Louvre. There's a chance my sister will fly over to visit me while I'm there.

My wife's family is more French than mine so she was pulling for it in the 1990's but when I discussed French historical locations it fizzled. Thats when she shifted gears for Italy. Which is strange because she was non-Italian but with the DNA test it turns out she is more mainland Italian than me. Her maternal grandmother side of the family was direct from Paris and her grandmother spoke fluent French. They don't know a lick because grandpa was "an American" (part Cherokee) through and through and preferred English only in his house. I thought "Boyee" was French name in my family. It turns out he was a jolly old Englishman living in France-Germany. So all the rest of my "French blood" is quasi-German. I wish someone kept the photos of the French houses. I remember looking at them when I was a kid. They seemed like large medieval looking structures.
As far as Paris, I'm not sure of any "popping" medieval locations but I'm sure there are many. Bastille has a plaza in its place so there is nothing really to see there. The Louvre would be the priority for me.

I got some good news about my Paris trip: my sister is going to come over and visit me while I'm there. She likes art and art history the way I do, so we are going to have a great time.
Aside from all of the sites in Paris, I've been doing a lot of research on day trips out of the city so places like Chartres Cathedral, Rouen, Fontainebleau, and Mont Saint-Michel are all on the table.
I still need to figure out how to get into those Paris Catacombs...

It made me think of a miniature I have: a skeletal, undead lord seated on a throne largely made out of bones and skulls, with skulls and bones leaning against it and littered about the base, and even a crucified skeleton on on the back of the throne. He'd make a great villain...
"Do you think I'm overdoing it with the skull theme?" He asks in a dry rasp as the party enters the chamber. "A little too 'Catacombes de Paris'?"

We visited Paris, the Loire Valley, and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with Heather’s mom in 2013-ish and it was a lot of fun!
Three weeks is a nice amount of time. Will you be staying in Paris the whole time?
Allan.

Allan -- That's great that you got to go to France! I'll have an apartment in Paris as my home base for the entire three weeks. My sister helped me find it on VRBO and it has a kitchen and is centrally located in the 1st Arrondissement. In general, my approach to European vacations now is to focus on one city and to just relax and get to enjoy that place. Maybe this is a result of me getting older and not wanting to feel rushed or too busy... That feels more like work travel than vacation. I'm sure I will take some day trips out of Paris but for the most part I'm just going to stay in the city and walk around and get to know it. Sometimes my favorite thing to do on vacation is to walk around in a strange city without even knowing exactly where I will end up!
