From the same source material as the Fifth Element:

Its different than those "Incal/Metabarons" comics that we were talking about a while ago that influenced 5th Element. Its based on another French space comic with the standard hero getting one-upped by a versatile woman. I vaguely remember reading one WORLD WITHOUT STARS in 1984 it seemed very HEAVY METAL-ish

All the comic books/albums in the series are great, if a bit outdated by others that were inspired by them. Since they are from the 60's and 70's they've been around for a long time. In Sweden the series were released by the name "Linda och Velentin" (i.e. Valérian et Laureline in reverse order).

I was entertained by this, but I can see why people didn't like it. It could have used a tighter script, as the whole thing seemed kind of scattered and lightweight. Many complained about the leads and their lack of chemistry, but I didn't think they were bad. I liked Rihanna's character and I wish she had been in it longer. And there were some older, experienced actors who felt under-used as if they could have helped carry the movie more. There was a lot of creativity in the visuals, but it leaned way too much on the CGI. At least it didn't crap on Luke Skywalker! And that's saying something. There was an interdimensional action scene that I really liked, and some aliens using guns that fired what seemed like blue viscid globs that were non-lethal. I liked the jellyfish storing memories, too.
I remember these comics from HEAVY METAL magazine, and I even had the issue with the grumpy converter that Laureline was carrying around for a while. They didn't bring up Laureline being from medieval France or any of the time travelling stuff in the movie.

I enjoyed it, but know nothing of its comic origins beyond what I'd read about after the film was released.
I don't think I knew that 5th Element was also based on a comic book.

I mentioned that we were talking about it a while back. They were supposed to do the film THE 5th ELEMENT as an adaptation of certain comics (THE INCAL and/or METABARONS) but then the director had creative differences with the writer and slapdashed a repurposed story together. Thats why THE 5th ELEMENT movie has this depth that seems like something is wrong but its not within the film itself. Here is where we talked about the comics in 2015: doomsdaygames.proboards.com/thread/1155/metabarons
