I was down in "the dungeon" last night converting a junked pile of old boardgame figures from BATLLEMASTER (a 1990's Games Workshop/Milton Bradley mass market game) that I found in a garbage can in 1996. I have the original set intact (with no box) but these were just loose pieces. So I snipped the bases up with a pair of pliers on the loose ones so they could be mounted singularly (cavalry, goblin warg riders, orcs, knights, etc.) and it was like an instant army. All I could think of was... CHAINMAIL! Remember when we were discussing those dungeon model scenery things? I forget the name. Was there anything like that for wargames? Like some kind of universal diorama pieces? I was thinking of designing some but I didn't know where to start. Something modular that I can use again. Any suggestions? I have several toy castles, I have some trees, is there any kind of universal but novelty piece that I could create? I was thinking of doing two medieval cogs for a naval battle. I've got this old wood bowl that is just begging to be sawed up. But that seems like a massive job. I can work clay like a wizard though in seconds. So I might forego that job.

I recently got some Gothic Buildings sets from Pegasus Hobbies. I see "Temple of Elemental Evil" when I look at this stuff. They also sell Gothic Ruins, and a lot of other pre-painted plastic buildings, scenery, miniatures, etc. Their stuff might give you some ideas: www.pegasushobbies.com/gm_main.htm# I think buildings, pieces of ruined walls, trees and boulders have the most reusable appeal. Handmade ships would definitely be cool for a game. I don't know if I've ever seen some decent cogs or old world galleys for use with miniatures. A friend of mine has some plastic pirate ships, but they have that 18th century look to them. I'd like to see some square sailed cogs, viking longships, naos and ancient galleys -- biremes and triremes.

there are models of all those types of ships but they're all expensive and foreign plastic models that you've got to buy in strange currency.
Wow, that link is great for inspirational ideas. The river prop looks cool.
