(Kind of) speaking of Forbidden Planet, this has always been a favorite of mine. I'm surprised that there hasn't been a remake yet. It would probably turn out like War of the Worlds though, which was another favorite. The remake blew.

They've tried and failed with all those half-hearted space psycho attack (its all in their mind or a demon, etc.) movies too numerous to name. There was one specifically "mind into matter" movie done in the 90's that wasn't that good. I can't remember the name of it and perhaps I shouldn't.

I've seen a few movies I've considered bad Forbidden Planet rip-offs. When I first heard about the War of the Worlds re-make, I was looking forward to seeing it. What a disappointment. It went from being a story about an alien invasion to being a story about a guy working out some issues with his kids, set to the backdrop of an alien invasion. Puke! There was such potential there. Same with Forbidden Planet. I'd hate to see the same kind of results.

Yeah, WOTW was what they call a "chick movie" it seems with just enough sci-fi lure to make their dates tolerate it. Thats the way they think these so-called "winning formula" makers. I just wish they'd make sci-fi films cheaper with more love for the genre than getting this big budget maximized for highest yield shit that they spoon out every now and then. That said, I would like Harrison Ford to return with Mark Hamill for another Star Wars. That goes without saying of course...

I don't think I'd like to see a Forbidden Planet remake... It's too much of an icon, with that soundtrack, and being such a part of that sci-fi era: Adventures in Space. "Red-blooded Men of science with a pioneering spirit brave the starways!"
I guess I didn't mind the "War of the Worlds" remake that much... I enjoyed the updated visuals that yet stayed true to the descriptions of the machines and aliens. And I kind of liked it that Spielberg was showing a parallel story. What can you say? Humans get their asses kicked until the Martians catch a cold! That's what happened in the book! But, without the lecture on bad parenting...
I don't think we're going to see Harrison Ford play Han Solo. It seems like everytime I see an interview with him (just read another one a few weeks ago in USA Today) he mentions how he doesn't like the Han character, thinks he's dumb, wanted to kill him off, etc.

As for a remake, yeah, it'd suck. This guy that just did this IRON MAN movie might pull it off though! In regards to Ford, I don't think he believes cash is dumb so you know "laserbrain" will be back. Maybe an online ban/petition of the Indiana Jones movie will "force" him to do SW Episodes 7-9....

I'd love to see Episodes VII, VIII, and IX with some of the original cast returning. But I think what we're actually going to get is a TV series -- which I also have high hopes for.

Forbidden Planet is definitely an icon, and still holds up well even today! The Johnny Quest episode with the energy beast always seemed to be inspired by it, to me! ^__^

STRANGE TALES #108 (1963) had the Human Torch fight some bad artist "Wilhelm Van Vile" who found alien paints from a prehistoric expedition to Earth that were left behind. The race based all there technology on these paints to create whatever they wanted as a picture and it would become reality. Van Vile called himself "The Painter" and he had a weird circular palette that looked like it had saucer fins coming off the back. Here was another "pure mugfaced Kirby-ite" they just flushed down the tubes. They brought him back as pure cheese in the 80's in Spiderman with none of that original Kirby-ish flair.

Have I ever mentioned my theory that HALLOWEEN is remake of FORBIDDEN PLANET and THE THING?
I seem to remember rambling about this but I can't recall where.
Anyway I just watched a viral video with a symphony playing "theramins" and I immediately went for the familiar theramin movies( FP and DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL) and there was a clip of behind the scenes that featured Carpenter going on about FP's score.
That Carpenter's organic tension-building sound is directly sourced from FP is the icing on the cake. I think my theory of Loomis somehow projecting Michael Myers was the original set up and then they just downplayed it.

I'll have to watch again and consider this.
