If there was a lemon law for kids, Gavin would qualify. Since before he was born he's been driving his parents crazy. When we got to the hospital after Liana went into labor, the doctor told us he was breech, and positioned in a way that required an emergency c section. Then there was the harness he had to wear because of hip dysphasia. Then the surgery for the malfunctioning tear duct. A bunch of ear infections and other little ailments. This past weekend was the worst though. He’d been running a fever, and all of a sudden he has a seizure. It was probably the scariest thing I’ve ever been through; he was convulsing, and his eyes were just blank. As a parent, it’s something you won’t forget. The good news is that it was most likely a febrile seizure, which is a seizure brought on by a fever. It’s very scary, but benign. Today we took Gavin to give a blood sample to check for agammaglobulinemia as a reason for him getting sick so frequently.

Gwen was a breech and needed a caesarean she just had her third birthday this last weekend. (Boy, I think I'm still hungover from Saturday! Everyone came down to the dungeon for other reasons and it seemed like I was going to start a game up but I was ten sheets to the wind by then!)

Our first was breech and was a C-section. She didn't have the hip dysphasia though -- although her legs did stick up in the air for the first week or so.
#2 was VBAC -- a lot of places won't do these any more.
#3 was also VBAC -- but only because of the successful VBAC from before. Thank goodness the wife didn't need another C-section.
All of ours have had blocked tear ducts but never needed the surgery.
#1 and #2 have been really prone to the croup -- #1 was even hospitalized for it once.
#2 had sleep apnea and had to have his tonsils out for it. It's amazing how not getting enough sleep affected him -- he was angry all the time, rude, disobedient, throwing things at my wife, etc. Then after he got his tonsils out and could sleep at night he was the happy little boy we remembered from before.
The only issue with #3 so far was her umbilical granuloma.

We kept hoping the tear duct would correct itself, but no luck.

A lot of C-section kids have problems with their tear ducts. It's the pushing that makes them open. Unfortunately (or fortunately I guess) my wife has pushed for a sum total of 30 minutes for #s 2 & 3.

Nawwww. Scott, your Gavin is a diamond and a blessing. You're just being challenged a bit while he adjusts to living. I will pray for his recovery and continued good health. Best wishes to you and your wife as you deal with this. My daughter's birth was a bit touchy - long delivery and then the chord was around the neck, so they did a low forceps delivery. She came out with a puffy eye and didn't look happy. I was a breech baby, but they didn't have c section back then, so I did come out ass first. Figures. It pretty much plays into my whole outlook on life. My poor Ma. She then had twins, 2 years later, and another a year later, brief break and then finally a girl. 5 kids in 7 years. Sheesh. Again, hoping for the best for Gavin.

Well, if a doctor does a C-section and something goes wrong, he can say that he did everything possible to avoid it. If it's a natural birth and something goes wrong, then someone will second-guess his decision not to do a C-section.
Plus "they" generally don't deliver breech babies naturally any more.
They had it then, they just didn't use it often because it is risky surgery (it was even riskier then).

Ahh, the joys of parenthood. The little ones sure can make us worry, eh?
