Would the disfigurement of of a paladin (I'm talking either natural or magical) cause that paladin to loose paladinhood. I mean if a magic users inteligents gets very low they would effectively stop being able to use their spells, wouldn't the reaction adjustment of a paladin and all that goes with it be at risk of being lost once charisma drops enough...if only temporarily. Would this make the dude a fighter until his chr. is restored?

Charisma isn't looks for one thing. The PH states, "A generally non-beautiful character can have a very high charisma...". Looks can be a factor, and were assumed to be, but personality and magnetism can override low physical attractiveness. Disfigurement has never played a part in my game since I don't believe it fits in the heroic fantasy genre. Scott

Yeah, I realize that charisma is a combination of things. Still I think I remember some magical trap or item that lowered charisma...both looks and personality?(perhaps a trap from some module or home made game). Just wondered if that would screw up a paladin.
We don't really use charisma much either. It's usefulness is limited to role play pretty mcuh.

I remember this topic came up at DF a good while back (shortly after I started posting there) and somebody posted a quote from Dragon "Sage Advice" that the stat requirements are only to qualify for the class in the first place, not to continue being a member of the class, and thus stat decreases (from aging, disease, magical effects, whatever) that take a character below his class's minimum stat requirements don't require the character to change classes. I don't know how 'official' that answer was (the Dragon Sage tended to just make up answers and then declare them to be definitive), but it seems fair to me -- a person needs a 17+ charisma to become a paladin, but once he's a paladin it doesn't matter if something lowers his charisma below 17, he can still remain a paladin even with a lower score.

Yes, there are certain magic items that can lower charisma (possilby from cursed scrolls, too). And if the "death's door" rule is used, then if a character drops to -6 or lower then a charisma penalty might apply.
I generally agree with Foster on this one, that the minimum is only required to take the class, adjustments afterwards do not affect the class.
However, I can also see the reasoning behind some type of limitation if a prime requisite is lowered beyond the minimum. I wouldn't make the character lose his class, not even demote a paladin to a fighter. I might, however, apply the x.p. penalties from OD&D for low ability scores, or possibly prevent the character from gaining further levels at all in that class. Perhaps something this sever would only be used if ALL of the character's prime requisites were lowered beyond the minimum.
