Does a beholder have to make a 'to hit' roll for the eye rays, or do you think they are area of effect powers?

I always played 90 degree arc for the central eye, and no roll to hit, but roll to save for the rest. It's kinda like a "laser-sight" on a gun, only better... ;D

I always ruled no roll to hit, but one of my players was whining when his cleric got disintegrated.

Bah!! Ask him to tell you how hard it is to "look" at something!! A few good players failed their saves and 'lost it' to Beholders in the "G-D-Q-series" in my campaign back in the day--that's what makes the survivors such as Woodstock, Yokon and Kato so extaordinary today... "but for the luck of the roll, there be me, not thee!"

Roll to hit? With what? I guess I don't understand the question...
In all of AD&D I don't know of any spell-like ray or beam that requires a "to hit" roll. The traditional mechanic has always been a saving throw against these sorts of attacks. And even the 6th level m-u spell disintegrate itself doesn't require touch, or an attack roll.
What makes the player think a "to hit" roll would be required in the first place?

This complaint always comes up when somebody gets disintegrated. Sweep him up in a dustpan and put him in an ashtray!
