This is the first TV series follow up to the 1995 anime movie. The series is good overall but not up to the level of the movie. It is like a crime drama or police procedural set in future that is highly cybernetic, and so even more vulnerable to hackers. They haven't really explained how this series fits in with the end of the movie, which makes me think it must be a prequel. They brought back the English voice actors for the chief and Batou, so there is some continuity there. But the main character, Major Kusanagi, has a different English voice actress, is drawn differently, and therefore feels like a different person. Probably the most annoying thing about the series is the presence of the Tachikoma mini-tanks which have impressive designs but annoying, child-like AI personalities and voices. That seems to be common in anime: the obligatory 'cute' or childish elements, which makes no sense to include when you consider who their target audience is. In this series the main character is a female cop walking around most of the time in what is basically a stripper outfit...
