Warning! This is not a traditional horror movie, or even a traditional movie. I liked it, but only after talking about afterwards. It is very symbolic and allegorical. I do like a movie that challenges viewers to think, but the marketing feels a bit dishonest in retrospect. How do you market this thing? It is like an experimental art movie incongruously having big stars and a wide release.
You have been warned.
My impression from the previews was that this was going to be a "Rosemary's Baby" sort of movie, with Jennifer Lawrence's character similar to Mia Farrow's, with all of these Satanists or cultists showing up to a house full of secrets, and with even her husband keeping secrets from her... Well, it's not quite that simple.

Was it like that that director's BLACK SWAN movie from 2010? I thought BLACK SWAN was going to be a horror but it was more of a muddle because it should have had a grounding in something sober.

This one is even more allegorical than BLACK SWAN. Now that you mention it, I think BLACK SWAN was also marketed as horror -- the trailer implied maybe something supernatural was going on. But the only horror in BLACK SWAN was psychological with the main character being so obsessed with artistic performance. This new movie is not so much psychological horror -- where nothing supernatural is going on -- as it is allegorical horror -- where what is going on is heavily symbolic of other things that the audience is left on their own to figure out. The director does provide the 'key' at the end, in case you are dense (like me) and need a hint. I have to give this movie credit: it has had me thinking for days, and I respect it for its ambitious risk-taking in an era of safe sequels and reboots.

Finally watched this. It was pretty good. I did see two themes running through which I initially thought was just one.
