I bought a case of Pilsner Urquell tonight. I used to be fond of it, but I have to say it's tasting kind of swilly. Maybe it's just because I have been drinking a lot of heavier, darker beers lately. I'll have to have a few more to see.

I don't mind 1 or 2 pilsners, but I much prefer stout. A good black & tan or 3 suits my fancy as well.

On a happy note, my favorite Indian restaurant is re-opening after an absence of almost two years. It's been so long since I've had decent Indian food.

Speaking of food... I was devising a menu for the Waterside Inn in Nulb, and I always find my mouth watering as I read the menu at the Inn of the Welcome Wench! For Nulb, I came up with meat- potatoes- onions-and carrots stew, fried cabbage with bacon, boiled potatoes, grilled trout, coarse bread, and cheese (and ham slices with eggs or gruel for breakfast). I figured "austere but filling" was the way to go there... At half the cost, you get what you pay for (or maybe, less!)

I don’t dislike it, but I’m not thrilled by the Belgian stuff. I prefer a German or German-style lager or pilsner. I’ll mix it up now and again with an ale or stout.
There are a couple of new Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh that I have not got to try yet. Now that you mention it, maybe I’ll try to grab something today.

I've been interested in pâté lately, and eating good Braunschweiger with different cheeses and wines. It seems like there are many variations of pâté to try from all over Europe.

Just a month or so ago I bought some Braunschweiger and Limburger cheese, but, to me, that goes better with beer.

That was some especially 'ripe' cheese by the way. It stunk up the whole first floor of my apartment.

Most of the Trappist beers are very good -- Chimay, Orval, and Rochefort especially. I'm not thrilled about Westmalle and I've never had Achel or Westvleteren (the latter is especially hard to find here in the U.S.). Of the Chimay varities, the Blue is the best, unless you can get the White (Tripel) on tap.
Saison Dupont is also excellent -- definitely one of my favorites.
Lindemann's (I like the Kriek or Cherry the best) is good for a change of pace.
Hoegaarden is a good choice, especially in the summer -- very refreshing.
I do tend to like beers with a floral nose.

There was one I had back in 1983 or so that was horrid--tasted like beer, gin and fruit juice mixed together. I'll have to ask Woodstock what that was--I've done my best to forget it! Give me a solid Stout from Ireland (or Toothsheaf from Austtralia--YUMM!!!!) or an English Ale any day! Along these lines, Tony used to use some ale when he made stew and I know that some use Belgian lambic and gueuze in salad dressings.
