I only just saw this yesterday, and it wasn't nearly as bad as all the reviews. Parts of it definitely felt like an "Oriental Adventures" game. The only thing that was embarrassing was shoehorning in Keanu Reeves as the lead character, explaining that he was a "half-breed" when he doesn't look the slightest bit Asian. It was like they were giving a half-hearted explanation for why a white guy was there, and it's not going to feel convincing, so why even bother... Why not just use an actual Asian-American actor for that role? To the Japanese, the idea that the most kick-ass character in a fantasy set in feudal/mythical Japan must be a white guy has to be annoying.

Translating actors over is hard. Case in point Toshiro Mifune. The guy was like a dead man in American productions but in Asian productions he's like a fireworks show. If they presented half of the Asian movies in their original words American audiences would fall asleep from the irrelevance.
Keanu, well, I haven't watched anything he did since THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (2003/PART 3) which I found retroactively made the first film a waste of time by not answering anything and not getting more cerebral. I'm still holding out for BILL & TED 3 maybe...

I liked 47 Ronin, but the bad ass white guy thing did bother me. But not nearly as much as Tom Cruise in the Last Samurai.
