Just bought the new DOOM. But I'll be sitting here 45 minutes while it downloads and updates.

I can't believe how disconnected I am from the Doom stuff I used to play it almost every other day for ten years straight. Can it even run on today's machines?
I recall DOOM 3 wasn't there a balrog-like monster at the end? Holy crap 2004??? 12 years! Geez, QUAKE III ARENA was 1999? I'm losing my mind!

I think the new one is a reboot. I haven't got to play yet.

I know... I can't believe the effects of "middle age time," either... the first DOOM was 1993! I remember playing that one, and the original WARCRAFT: ORCS & HUMANS, which was like a year later. That was really the beginning of the era of great home-based video games. The early 90's... and now that was over 20 years ago! What the hell!
Scott has the right idea -- just dive back in and see what's up with the franchise these days.
I guess we'll be the first generation hooked up to video-game helmets in the retirement homes.

Remember those game guides that had maps and where monsters were? The MORTAL KOMBAT 2 one had all the moves. The DOOM guide had monster descriptions and 3d layouts. It was tossed out (when I tossed all the "post-Gygax nerd TSR" shit in the trash in the late 90s) but I think it had D&D conversions that I did stuffed in there. Unless they're laying around somewhere else. I converted all the DIABLO and the DIABLO HELLFIRE monsters too.

Yeah, I had the game guide for BALDUR'S GATE. It was a good game, even though it was 2nd edition and set in the Forgotten Realms, because although there was an overall plot, it was a sandbox you could roam around in and explore. The games I played obsessively, though, were DIABLO and STARCRAFT. I always thought DIABLO was a pretty good simulation of OD&D style dungeon-delving. Dungeons > crypts > caves > hell!

There's also an online multi player option, but I haven't tried it yet.

I just checked and those stats I wrote out are either stuffed in something obscure or gone for good.
I just watched a video of the end of DOOM 3 and their is a bit of a LOTR film balrog feel but concept-wise its just the cyberdemon from DOOM II who was the boss.
Here is the MONSTER LIST in bold is original DOOM followed by a list of DOOM 3 monsters which I won't repeat as they are similar but fancier looking:
Former Human Former Human Sergeant Former Commando Imps (throws energy ball missiles) Demon (runs at you) Spectre (invisible "Demon") Lost Soul (flaming skull) Cacodemon (beholder-like) Hell Knight (wimpy baron of hell) Baron of Hell (original boss with green fireballs) Arachnotron (brain with robot legs and plasma rifle) Pain Elemental (super cacodemon) Revenant (guided missile skeleton) Mancubus (chubby guy with fireball gun hands) Arch-Vile (kind of a super imp) The Spider Mastermind (big arachnotron with chaingun) The Cyberdemon (robot goat legs/missile hand)
DOOM III Zombie (generic) Zombie, Chainsaw Zombie, Commando Zombie, Fat Zombie, Flaming Zombie, Z-Sec Security Pistol/Machine Gun/Shield/Shotgun Archvile Cherub (Flying Baby with claws) Cacodemon Hellknight Imp Lost Soul Maggot (two headed crawling humanoid with claws) Mancubus Pinky (Cyborg version of demon from original) Revenant Tick (human head with legs explodes) Trite (super Tick) Wraith (teleporting variant imp) Cyberdemon Boss Guardian Boss (blind balrog with seekers) Sabaoth Boss (human tank with BFG) Vagary Boss (telekinetic spider woman)

The lesser boss in DOOM 3, the guardian, is definitely Jackson balrog-like. I was mixed up.

Why don't they just title the new game DOOM 4? That is what everyone is calling it, anyway.
