With the expanded spell information provided in the DMG, M-Us are able to detect the type of magic, as well as if something is magic. It makes illusions pretty easy to detect, if you use the spell. I'd treat M-U related items with the ability the same way. What about other items, swords, etc. Any reference you're aware of, or how would you handle it? A detect magic wand, which can be used by anybody, can detect type if another round is spent concentrating. Would that be the precedent, except for cleric items?

Yeah, I would always let the book stand and work around it. No one is going to use it in a noisy situation and the longer they have it the more they'll want to expose it which is how they managed to get it in the first place.
