For several years I've been reading blurbs about this being made into a movie. At first I was intrigued by the possibilities. Johnny Depp is rumored to play Kolchak. The last I heard, and it bummed me out, was that it was going to be a Disney movie. The Night Stalker books were darker than the series was, and I was hoping some of that might show up in a movie version, but now I'm thinking it will be more campy.

It's going to be hard to top the Dad from "A Christmas Story"!

I don't think 'top' would be an expectation, but he could make it interesting. Maybe close to his role in the 9th Gate?

I was thinking more like his role from "Sleepy Hollow."
"Ichabod Crane: The Night Stalker"

The original show was good but I think I may have only seen it in late night syndication "Late Late Show" type time slots in the mid to late 1970's. In an aside, I was just watching NIGHT GALLERY (1970-1973 Rod Serling painting show) two days ago, I had DVRed a pile of episodes, and this one story was real vapid and shitty. Then "Luca Brazzi" from THE GODFATHER (1974) shows up in a one line bit part so I kept watching, I had never seen him in anything besides GF, so I wanted to be sure it was him. So having a phone where I can just say look up "Luca Brazzi" I'm looking at his IMDB profile and no NIGHT GALLERY. Man, I was like, "GENE, YOU'RE FUCKING LOSING IT!" then I see this show listed same year as THE GODFATHER in 1974 called THE SIXTH SENSE (2 seasons in 1972). It turns out that that show (Sixth Sense) was chopped up and had the investigative characters removed and had Serling narrative added to be included in NIGHT GALLERY syndication. Now here is the weird part the star of SIXTH SENSE was Gary Collins and he never appears in the NIGHT GALLERY episode that I watched (giving it that vapid feel I was saying) and a few weeks ago Collins' wife Mary Ann Mobley died and my wife was like "who is she?" and I answered "she's married to Gary Collins" and she's like "Who is he?" and I couldn't think of anything Collins did. NIGHT GALLERY!!!

I remember Night Stalker from late 70s, late night, Friday night specifically, syndication. Night Gallery was a Saturday afternoon thing, that ran right before, or after, some other paranormal rerun.

I bought the original Night Stalker eBook. It was OK. Good story written by a so so writer. It was presented from the perspective of somebody who knew Kolchak and had his notes on the case. The notes are from Kolchak's perspective. It's sort of like the Dracula novel in that way, and it is about a vampire. The book was set in Las Vegas. I can't remember if the original TV movie was set in Vegas or in Chicago like the series.

You remember properly (on Chicago and Vegas), Scott! I was bewildered as a teen when Kolchak ended, as I had not seen any notice and there was no internet to consult! ^__^

I don't think McGavin ever really got into the role.

I did some reading up on this, and it seems that McGavin really did like the character, but was very unhappy about the way the network handled the show.

I'd like to watch them all in a row and see how hey hold up today. The problem with spending that much time in front of the TV is a big one though! I wish they had streaming Netflix in the 1990's!
