I rented this the other day. There was added material in it that I'd never seen before. There was a scene where Conan is talking to Subataii as they are preparing for Thulsa Doom's attack after getting the princess. Conan is remembering going on walks in the forest with his father when was 4 or 5 years old. Then the princess goes with him when he returns to kill Thulsa Doom and helps him by distracting guards, and Mako's speach at the end is different. I've seen this movie a million times, and owned it on multiple formats, but this was the first time I've seen this stuff. It was interesting to see, but the movie was better with it out.

It's funny isn't it? For a long time I subscribed to the philosophy that "more was better" when it came to movies, and always thought that anything cut should be added back in. I've gradually come to think otherwise; often the edits make sense, they aren't there just to make the movie shorter/cheaper but because the cut scenes don't help the plot.
IMHO, A recent example of this is the extended version of "the Two Towers" where about 10 minutes (or more) of new footage was added to the end; it's a bunch of stuff that a lot of guys would say "hell yeah, put that back in" but watching the effect that it had on the way the original version wrapped everything up I can only conclude that it was a mistake to do it. Maybe there is a better way that Jackson could have done it without trampling over Sam's "the things that really matter" speech; we might see a "Directors Extended Betterer Cut" version someday.

I like seeing the footage that was cut, but not always put back into the movie. Seperate bonus material would have been better here. This disc just put it in and didn't give me the option of watching the original theatrical version. The extra footage for Alien was better cut. The extra footage for Aliens was better put back in.

I loved that scene with Harry Dean Stanton being morphed slowly and Tom Skerrit begging Sigourney Weaver to kill him. Reminded me of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and is certainly more "alien" than the Cameron "bee hive". Not that I dislike "ALIENS", its just that I read the novelization after I saw the original movie in 79 and I was a big fan of the "body snatcher" version depicted within plus there was a hint that it may have been a robot. I still have my souvenir movie poster with the Nostromo crew descriptions on the back of the poster of the "pilot alien" somewheres (Unless it got snatched! Gotta check on that!).
I actually had them encounter a pre-ALIENS "snatcher" alien in a D&D game back in 1983.

I prefer the hive concept. But I'll have to check out the body snatcher scenes again and see if I still feel the same way I did when I first saw them.

Its hard not to like Cameron's efforts. I wonder when he's coming back to reality?
If you noticed, he brought back Ron Cobb (who designed Nostromo) to design the colony. Check out the work by Cobb in the DVD extras. Wow!
He also did the work for CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

Cobb also did the look of the outside of the DARK STAR ship and he diesigned the Hammerhead alien for the cantina scene in STAR WARS. I think the horned creature as well.
