Originally, mapping was considered one of the challenges of the game. Players were expected to create accurate maps to help them explore and escape from the dungeons. DMs designed maps just to screw with the mappers. My personal experience is that it’s kind of a lost art. When I started playing my DMs mapped for the party, and that’s how I usually handle it. There have been exceptions, but for the most part the players don’t map. I think I’m going to try to go old school on this for a few sessions, especially while I’m DMing the mega-dungeon, and see how it works out. Any thoughts on this aspect of the game?

Although I respect mapping as a tradition dating back the beginning of the game, I just don't find that it makes the game more enjoyable. Challenging, yes. Tedious, yes. Fun, no. There's a reason most players aren't required to map anymore, and I think that's because most DM's have figured out it doesn't enhance the game... it's just annoying. After a week at work, when many of us have spent hours doing tedious, detail-oriented "figure out this puzzle" kinds of jobs, many of us would rather focus on other aspects come game night.

I'll probably give it a try, at least one night. My experience with players mapping is that it is usually faster, than when I do it. I tend to be overly detailed for a functional, in the moment map. The players' maps usually look more like this: I'll usually help flesh it out later.

Ugh. I think we both know who is going to get stuck with this job.
