I wanted a magic user kit that was more flexible, and I think creating a new balanced kit is a good way to learn the game system. So here is what I came up with...
Kit: Maji
The Maji study magic as an integral part of life and the world around them. This is both an advantage as the spells he develops are from any of the schools of magic that interests him. Also as the spells the Maji learns are from watching life and the world, his spell book is life and the world, so he may cast any spell he knows at any time. And a disadvantage, as inspiration drawn from life and nature is much slower in coming than learning by route from other magic users. (it takes 3 times as many experience points to level up (Lv2 at 7,500 and Lv3 at 15,000 etc.)
The Maji may draw his spells from any 5 schools of magic that he chooses, (3 major and 2 minor) but his spell progress is held back one level because of the difficulty of self study. So his first spell comes at 2nd Lv Lastly at 8th Lv he may cast spells from any school that is at least 3 Lvs from his highest normal spell. I.E. At 8th Lv he may cast 4-1st Lv spells from any school, 3-2nd Lv spells form the 5 schools that he has chosen, 2-3rd Lv spells form the 5 schools that he has chosen, and 1-4th Lv spells form the 5 schools that he has chosen.
Because he studies nature and life in his pursuit of magic, the Maji is very physically fit and his Hit Points reflects this, 2d6 HP per Lv. I know that this is a lot of HP for a first Lv magic user, heck it's slightly better than a barbarian, but this magic user won't be able to cast any spells until he's survived through 7,500 ExP worth of adventures, and he can only use his traditional weapon.
To reflect The Maji's relevance for life he may only use the traditional weapon, Sword of the Maji, a 2 handed bludgeoning weapon, (speed 8, 2d4 S-M, 2d8 L)
