In Polyhedron #22, pg. 24, the Dispel Confusion states thata Rope of Entanglement is not "auto-hit", and that it strikes as a 4HD creature to entangle. These answers were considered "official" by Gary, who in fact fielded many of the questions himself (including at least one for sure in this issue). This might affect how many are playing this item...

That's a good bit of info to consider. As presented in the DMG, the item can be a game breaker. In my campaign, the magic-user Maylin has one. He's a little melee-shy, or it would come into play a lot more often.

Do you think this was the original intent, or a retro 'fix' because the item can be a game-breaker? I don't have any of the OD&D books handy to check if it was in there, and what it said. In the DMG it seems like the intent was auto-hit. What did the text in the POly Q&A state?

From the Greyhawk supplement: "Rope of Entanglement: A magical rope which will entwine itself around from 2 - 8 man-sized opponents(reduce or expand accordingly for other sizes of opponents). It can be hit only on a 20, and can take 20 damage points before it is destroyed."
From Polyhedron #22: "ADQ: Do ropes of entanglement automatically hit? ADA: No, a standard "to hit" roll is needed. The level of the user is irrelevant; the rope strikes as a creature of 4 Hit Dice (and, of course, is AC -2, hp 22, as given in the description)."
