As a veteran player for more than 20 years ive played Dungeons and Dragons since first edition, up till 3.5 and every edition in-between. My personal preference is AD&D 2nd ed. Just out of curiosity, what version is preferred by others, and why?

This is pretty much a 1E site.

Yep--1E; 2E leaves a bad taste mostly due to the Lorraine/Blumes thing, and then the bungled efforts to "retain" the Greyhawk flavor. Or, to fool the general playing public into believing that it was 'Business As Usual'! ^__^

Yes, first edition is what I'll refer to first then Chainmail then 3 book 74 and supps for what I play. What little second edition residue that i accumulated I've completed phased out as not worth the effort anymore. From my view, it seems the most well-intentioned designers (ex: later Tom Moldvay stuff) were muddled during that time so I no longer see it in the right style to randomly grab from anymore.

My preferred edition is 1st edition. I've stopped answering why. It's just the version I like best.
I do play in a 2nd edition AD&D game, however. My regular DM, who has been running a game since 1983, started with 1st edition, switched over to 2nd edition when it came out, and never changed editions again. Actually, he uses a kind of mix of 1st and 2nd edition, with a heavy dose of his own creativity and ideas. I guess that is the important part.
