Would you consider this an acceptable use of the augury spell: To avoid donning/using cursed items, the party cleric casts an augury spell and asks if weal or woe will result in wearing/drinking/whatever the item.

I believe that is an intelligent use of the spell. But also, the example in the DMG seems to allow the DM a lot of leeway in being cryptic or vague -- probably a nod to the fact that it's only a 2nd level spell.

Thinking about it a bit more, I think the 3 turn restriction could be a factor as well. For example, a cloak of poisonous will kill you instantly, so asking if putting the cloak on would be a bad thing would provide a chance for success, but while safe in town you ask about using some item that only reveals its cursed nature in combat, which is not likely to occur any time soon, would probably get a blank reply.

I thought Augury allowed only Yes/No responses?

No, augury lets you know if an action will be a benefit or harmful.

It is a very clever use of the spell, which should be rewarded...up to the point that it becomes an ever-present and debilitating factor. I'd then be introducing items that are not so clear-cut ~ cursed backbiter spears work perfectly well, until the user rolls a natural 20. So an augury could produce a "beneficial" answer, which later proves to have a sting in the tail.

No, augury lets you know if an action will be a benefit or harmful. Doh, that's what I get for going by memory

Also; as the DM, in the "short term" (however long that might be...) you might have beneficial plans. Then, in the future, it might turn out very bad--Think "Stormbringer"... ^__^
