Sheesh, the Olympics and football has got me off my reading, but I finally got back into it and finished "Saga".
It was a really good/fun read. I think Gary did a very good job.
A couple of questions for youse guys:
Mauve Castle?? Rather than Maure. As I write this, I'm fuzzying about maybe a conversation about this at Rob's forum. Anyone know why Gary called it Mauve?
I enjoyed the Cataboligne and Gary mentions something about possibly making into a future MM or rule book. Didn't see it in MM, MMII, FF or the 2EMM.
Does anyone know if it made it into a module or other accesory?
Maybe, it was close enough to one of the other demons/devils - horned for instance.
Thanks.
;D

Man, you're 23 years of disappointments behind! Seriously, the catoboligne was supposed to appear but that was washed out like so many other plans. Mauve/maure is an enigma. I called it Mauve for years so its stuck in that mode forever for me.

I think the whole "Maure/Mauve" goes back to how people originally read Darlene's map. As to the Cataboligne, here was my write-up based on Gary's notes from the end of the story:
Cataboligne
FREQUENCY: Very rare NO. APPEARING: 1 ARMOR CLASS: -3 MOVE: 9" HIT DICE: 9 % IN LAIR: 20% TREASURE TYPE: NO. OF ATTACKS: 3 DAMAGE/ATTACK: 1 – 6/1 – 6/ 2 - 8 SPECIAL ATTACKS: See below SPECIAL DEFENSES: +3 or better weapon to hit MAGIC RESISTANCE: 60% INTELLIGENCE: Very ALIGNMENT: Chaotic evil SIZE: L (8'+ tall) PSIONIC ABILITY: 150 LEVEL/X.P. VALUE: VII/ 2900 + 12/HP
Cataboligne demons are quite nasty, and often summoned to be used as guardians. They may, at will and once per melee round, use the following abilities: animate dead (as 9th level magic-user), cause fear (as wand), cause paralysis, change self, darkness (10' radius), detect invisible, dispel magic, levitate (as a 9th level magic-user), magic missile (4 missiles), telekinese (4000 g.p.), and teleport (no error). Catabolignes regenerate as do trolls until they are totally slain. This demon has a wrinkled visage with wide, fanged mouth, yellow eyes with horizontally-slitted pupils, and horns. Its body is gray-blue and covered by plated scales, and twin rows of triangular spines run down its back. Its hands and feet are wickedly-clawed and its somewhat short tail ends in a spike.

BTW, Gary said that was a pretty accurate representation and that "No", he would not let me see his original, as he intended on adding the critter first to Mythus, and then to LA! ^__^

I'll have Scotty post the original letter that sparked off the creation of Cataboligne stats; I had started mailing Gary extra-planar ideas in 1987, and was quickly discovering that he had no current interest in AD&D, but was focused on creating Mythus. I eventually signed on to that venture... ^__^

Thanks, Scott! As you can derive, I had asked for stat info on deities and monsters, and had delivered a blistering commentary on the Manual of the Planes in the previous letter. MotP had, in fact, prompted me to send my ideas on how I had thought the Planes should work... kinda cocky in hindsight! I had said something to the effect of: "Doesn't anybody left at TSR have an understanding of the game and how it worked and where it was going?" I didn't know about the whole Lorraine/Blumes thing til later when I talked with Gary, Frank and Dave (Newton) while working on a Mythus product timeline up in Lake Geneva... ^__^

BTW, you will note that Gary makes an offhand slam at Widerness Survival Guide and Dungeoneers Survival Guide, but not UA--that was simply deemed as a temporary filler until everything could have been consolidated and added to for what would have been Gary's vision of 2E. Some of those ideas ended up in Mythus...

Damn, he should have published the GUIDE TO D&D SUCKDOM at that time and saved me a few dollars...

Whoa!! Thanks for posting all this cool stuff guys. Nice work on the demon, GT! I see Gary dictated that letter to gcg - Gail, I assume? Gail Carpenter Gygax or Gail has a middle name that starts with C. Saga of Old City is dedicated to Gail as I'm sure everyone knows. Great stuff.
