Well, I just received my lot of Gord books that I won on eBay!! All 7 for less than $20 (includes shipping). The books are in excellent condition. So here goes ~ I'll begin reading Saga after I finish Starship Troopers by Heinlein.

WHAT?!?! You haven't read "Starship Troopers" yet? (Whacks Rhu with the rolled up newspaper of Justice!) Next thing I know, you'll tell me you've never read "Starship" (aka: "Non-Stop") by Brian Aldiss... ^__^

I remember reading it and thinking that I was getting sleepy from it. One of the few cases where I liked the movie more than the book.. And who is Aldiss? Maraudar

Maybe that was because NOWADAYS powered armor is a dime-a-dozen; but not tooooooo far back, it was an original concept. And Aldiss is a contemporary/friend of Michael Moorcock (who wrote the Elric series); except he wrote sci fi. If you're familiar with S3, then you've experienced the influence of Aldiss...

It has that Verhoeven "titzy" feel but make no mistake the movie is cool.
Michael "The Scannners Guy" Ironside is in it and he rules in it too.
The direct to video sequel is trying but its piss poor. So I can imagine the next direct to video DVD is going to be a little wan. But I'll definitely give it a chance.

I have to separate the movie from the book, or it pisses me off... 1) No powered armor!!!!! 2) Plasma farting beetles (that hit targets in low orbit no less!) Maybe in Fantasy; definitely not Science Fiction! ^__^

Rhuvein, enjoy the Gord books! I definitely love them, and have read them each at least twice, some three times, and I think Artifact of Evil four times! By far the best order to read them in is:
Saga of Old City Night Arrant Artifact of Evil Sea of Death City of Hawks Come Endless Darkness Dance of Demons
That’s more or less chronological. Parts of City of Hawks take place before even Saga of Old City but it must be read after the others, as they are like flashbacks, revisiting earlier events in light of revelations from Artifact of Evil and Sea of Death. Regards.

A few slow chapters, but all in all worthwhile.

Back in 1985 I was such a Greyhawk fan. I had read At Moonset Blackcat Comes, the first Gord story, published in Dragon 100, and couldn't wait for Saga of Old City to come out. When it finally did, I read it in a day. I think I did the same with Artifact of Evil. Now, I'm reading the TLG re-releases. Very nice books. Gary did some minor editing. I'm more objective this time around. I still think they're good books, but they don't grab me like they did. I think Gary's DJ books were better written. At Moonset Blackcat Comes is great though. A great, pure pulp, short story.

When you say Gary did some minor editing, do you know what changes were made? Just rephrasing a few sentences here and there?

I don't know. And I don't have the originals around to compare.

They were probably just minor things Gary decided to alter--no major plot devices (don't have the new ones...). And, I agree: His Setne novels were better written. But I loved the Gord novels mostly as sources of Greyhawk arcana in a Greyhawk-unfriendly era. ^__^

Anyone checked out the last Gord/Chert story penned by KR (with Gary)? IIRC it was announced at GenCon, and appears in "Of Dice and Men"? edit: And for the record, I haven't read Starship Troopers either

Geez! I was talking about this at the bookstore the other day: they've got the kids reading Camus and Mann, but are forgetting the Twain and Stevenson! Har!! ^__^

Yeah, the memories of GREYHAWK ADVENTURES then "turning" (into Estes' cheapie for hire books) coinciding with the entire game turning into a money-making experiment in "how far one can go abusing a captured audience until they become so victimized that they begin to tolerate the abuse"! Burn the memories! Honestly, I've read the Gord stories so many times in hope that someday Gary would come back and "fix" D&D (add more ideas in theme, clarify more ideas, etc.) but now? The only thing that could restart my interest in "new Gord" would be an official D&D restoration or at least an official condemnation of bad D&D. The likelihood of which I would equate with trends of the last few decades in American mentality (veggies, animal rights, many other mainstream things.) finally admitting that its equivocal with trends in Nazi mentality. Yeah right! The only way that you can could put Gord where he belongs would be by by a total financial conquest of the D&D game by a true fan, subsequent discontinuation of all forms of "New D&D" and probably the biggest apology in all creation in the form of restoring the lead miniatures market to keep the game where it belongs in the hands of those that know how to handle lead! Eh, yah never know.... The cold war is coming back after all...

Next thing I know, you'll tell me you've never read "Starship" (aka: "Non-Stop") by Brian Aldiss... ^__^ OK, I won't tell you! ;D Heh, reading this post (and I read it when you posted it) - I look at my sc-fi bookcase of about 4-500 books. And I'll say that I've read another 200 or so from the library. But, sci-fi probably only accounts for 1/4 (maybe less) or so of my overall book reading. I've got 14+ bookcases in addition to the sci-fi one. Hmmm, what's the point?? Not sure. Oh yeah,I haven't read that book, but it's good to know that there are many excellent books yet to read. I don't care so much for the new generation of sci-fi authors (actually, except for the one's from 20 years ago - Brin, Gibson & Bear - they are very good). Heh, I don't even know who the current gen is. So . . . JIm Ward mentioned Starship in his Q&A thread yesterday as an inspiration for MA. I filed that and saw this post again and bought the book on eBay. So thanks, mon ami. Almost done with Saga, but the Olympics and summer got in the way. Peace.

Eh, yah never know.... The cold war is coming back after all... I don't want to see Gord done by anyone else. It's like non-Howard Conan. Greyhawk has been butchered to the point that trying to recapture the original feel is not a realistic expectation. A new individual or company needs to recreate this wheel. Starting from scratch, but using the same ingredients that Gary used. That goes for the rules set and the setting.
