Anybody read Clark Ashton Smith's "The Seven Geases"? There's a character named Lord Ralibar in there. Think it's a likely inspiration for Lord Robilar? EGG made up the name Robilar and suggested Rob use it. You can be sure Gary was familiar with the story.

Although Rob is a huge fan of CAS, I sort of figured that Gary doesn't much care for CAS. I seem to recall some remark from Gary to the effect that "CAS isn't part of my library". CAS certainly isn't mentioned in the DMG appendix.
It would be quite the coincidence, though. I did read that story not too long ago. "Ralibar-->Robilar" heh! Yeah, that sounds typical. Regards.

Nah, thats a coincidence. If you get into the war jargon that these miniature enthusiasts were into theres a fairly common term for light cavlry called hobilers or hobilars (same origin as "hobby horse"). The DMG lists them as hobilars. Rob recalled to me of reading "Gnome Cache" as Gary wrote it page by page and he deliberately threw that name in there because of his enthusiasm. Later he adopted it for his character, blah, blah, blah...

Perhaps Rob combined the two to get Robilar, consciously or not. I often did that with my characters--except Kato the Halfling; he was simply named after Inspector Clouseau's servant, and therefore Bruce Lee's character from the Green Hornet, 'cause I thought it sounded cool.

GT, if I remember correctly, the name Robilar was Gary's creation. He suggested Rob use it for his new unnamed fighter character.

I just noticed on Dragonsfoot, Rob's signiture is a Ralibar Quote: "How now, varlet! said Ralibar Vooz..." Who are you that speak so churlishly to a magistrate of Commoriom and a cousin to King Homquat?"--C.A. Smith's "The Seven Geases."

(Best impersonation of Ed McMahon.)YES! See? What'd I tell ya? BTW there is another tip of the hat to Gary's avid reader, the youthful Rob, that actually made it into the magazine a character named "Hob" which is a medieval nickname for "Robert" making my "hobilar to robilar" theory laser-tight and all this "ralibar nonsense" rather coincidental... (Purses lips together and extends chin...)Harumph!

Which came first, the Robilar or the Gnome's Cache? I'm a bit rusty on pre-1978 happenings. I think Robilar already existed though when Gnome's Cache was put into the Dragon.

Yeah... I just checked : Dragon #1 wherein the story begins was 1976. Interestingly, there are characters named "Hob" and "Master Teric" also. ^__^
