I haven't seen the movie yet but I heard the buzz. I watched the trailer and at first I thought I was watching an old trailer of a movie I'd never seen from the 1970's or 80's. That is intentional as the trailer has the words "IN THEATERS 1973" which blur and then change to "IN THEATERS 2023." I know it is very low budget, so I think it is one of those movies that it is best to lower one's expectations for. But I want to give this one a chance, as it evokes that feeling of being a kid and waking up in the middle of the night when your home is transformed into something sinister due to how dark it is. It just reminded me of something that happened to me when I was a kid, maybe around 7 years old. It was the middle of winter and we'd just had a heavy snow, like a blizzard. I woke up in the middle of the night and I went to my parents' bedroom and they were not there. I searched around the house and called out to them and there was no answer. There was no context to it -- it was like they vanished. I was terrified and didn't know what to do and just retreated to my bedroom. Eventually they came home and I found out what happened: some friends of theirs with snowmobiles stopped by and took my parents for a ride late at night -- maybe around 11 PM or midnight. Since my sister and I were already sleeping my parents thought they could go on a short ride and we'd never even know they were gone. That is honestly one of my scariest childhood memories, simply because I couldn't make sense of the situation and had no idea what to do and the dark house at night felt altered into something else which made my imagination run wild!
HECK (2020) is a short horror film by the same director, Kyle Edward Ball, that is worth checking out as it is currently free to watch on YouTube. EDIT: I just watched HECK and recommend seeing SKINAMARINK first, just in case the latter is a remake/expansion on the former -- which I think may be, based on some things I read online.
