In the SPELL EXPLANATIONS section of the DMG p. 41, it says under the notes for the Glyph of Warding: "If a cleric is on hand to determine that a glyph of warding is certainly in existence, an associated magic-user can thereafter use erase spell and possibly (50% + 2% level of the m-u) remove the glyph... As a detect traps will see the form of the glyph, a cleric might believe he or she knows the name of the glyph from past experience, and try to bypass it -- possibly with success." This implies that a cleric is needed confirm a glyph of warding is there and it is by means of a detect traps spell that this is done so. The description of the spell is a bit vague. Is it invisible until revealed by a cleric? From the spell description in the PH, p. 47: "When the spell is cast, the cleric weaves a tracery of faintly flowing lines around the warding sigil." Does the warded area continue to glow faintly while the spell is in effect, or is this only during the casting time? If this glyph of warding is invisible until revealed by a cleric casting find traps, are there any other means of detecting it? I was thinking a true seeing should work and that detect magic will reveal faint magic of the abjuration-evocation types if known. Would read magic allow one to see the glyph of warding? I assume dispel magic can be cast upon it, with the usual base 50% modified by level differences of the casters on a per 5% basis.
Side note: I remember in the BALDUR'S GATE video game some clerics had missile weapons that were glyphs of warding and went off on impact. Although I thought this was a creative idea, I think it goes against the spirit of the spell which is warding and should be therefore defensive and bound to a location. A missile weapon isn't a location or fixed object to be warded. The spell says on PH p. 47 it "is a powerful inscription magically drawn to prevent unauthorized or hostile creatures from passing, entering, or opening. It can be used to guard a small bridge, ward and entry, or as a trap on a chest or box." Otherwise, you could end up with clerics casting it on boxes or other small objects like sling bullets and war hammers that get thrown at enemies. On the other hand, it only does 2 hp per level of the cleric. What do you guys think? Would you allow the 'glyph grenade' as a clerical missile weapon?
