A few days ago I was laying out the foundation of an all new campaign group then a few days later someone mentioned a news story. Next an exasperating back and forth between people made the fellowship flush hard.

The background:
One is all business business, another is glib whatever is free, another is someone who has to remark on everyone news story to show where they stand and the other is doesn't really care but wife is college activist level.
I'm Mordenkainen level of neutrality of course regardless but I'm getting cited left and right to establish facts.
Do you just abandon this ship and put together something else or just plow forward and rise above this crap?

In our game group there are frequent pre- and post-game BS sessions on any topic including political or news related griping (lately "Can you believe it?" complaints about Trump's latest gaffes), and I think that is okay as long as it doesn't escalate or derail the game itself. You could just invoke the "no politics, no religion" house rule during game night! The gamers in our group are probably 60/40 liberal to conservative, and most of the griping is done by the left, and to the credit of the guys on the right they usually don't take the bait or argue -- they just ignore it. Also, we're all friends, so that makes it easier. I wouldn't want to put together a gaming group of people who don't like each other, and some people out there will dislike you if they find out your politics are different than yours. I think that's the key: to have a group of players who like each other.

That's probably the biggest advantage of gaming with 10 year olds.

Part of my brain lives in my D&D campaign as ongoing DM (secret encounters ranging from deals to wars, etc. going on in the background) but this long of a hiatus has created a need for constant activity whereas these people are probably thinking about the entire everything (game system and campaign detail) in the prior twenty four hours before playing.
People were even more political when we were young but as a mature person its in the forefront. Perhaps dropping alignment scrutiny temporarily maybe that'll do something.

Things are leveling off as far as being at each other's throats but there was an attempt to bring me into it (because I had attended a protest a few months ago although it was tangential because my daughter didn't want to get clobbered by counter protesters.) and I wasn't going to have it so I think I have addressed it directly. Discourse in a calm manner what you believe and then move on. I've come to the conclusion that friends should have reasonable discourse of some kind on any subject or they're not really friends. Seriously, time to plow forward.
