It looks a lot like some John Carpenter movies, in particular THE THING and PRINCE OF DARKNESS, but also with some influences from Clive Barker movies like HELLRAISER and HELLBOUND (with the evil doctor),as well as PHANTASM, EVENT HORIZON, H. P. Lovecraft, etc. The hospital scene with burning gurney/stretcher reminds me of HALLOWEEN 2. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDllMrBW62E

I just read a post about the Void that even described it as Carpenter-esque.

Story wise, I'm guessing it will be like "the Dunwich Horror" with entity like Yog Sothoth brought into our world through a monstrous birth, and then all sorts of 'spawn' and transformations. Remember when Wilbur Whateley wrote in his journal: I wonder how I shall look when the earth is cleared and there are no earth beings on it. He that came with the Aklo Sabaoth said I may be transfigured, there being much of outside to work on.
In D&D: "I wonder what I shall look like after Lord Juiblex transfigures me!?!"

I just watched on pay-per-view.
<<<<SPOILER>>> .
. . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . ..
.. . . .
Not bad very Lovecraft-esque something they did was interesting by using photographs and a mad James Bond villain rhetoric kind of gave it an HPL character sifting through notes vibe. Not too much explanation making it mysterious while constantly revealing more.

There was a thumbs down from the peanut gallery regarding why this doesn't make sense though so its not an Academy award winner.

Leaving it unexplained, and having it all not make sense, are potentially two different things. I'm okay with leaving things unexplained, in fact I prefer that, as I like the mental challenge of having to piece things together on my own. And in the horror genre, not being able to understand or process what you're experiencing, at least right away, can add a lot to the horror. But if the movie doesn't make sense, as in the various elements don't cohere together, that could be a bad thing.

There is a lot of things going on and a lot of it is not explained adequately and it wraps on one of those notes following up on a scene earlier without a resolve and then ends with no resolve for where the villain is.
From my perspective it was a hat full of madness and that was sufficient but the reaction from my wife and daughter in their analysis is that this film made zero sense. With solid justifications in the review of standard films.

I finally got around to seeing this one. I liked it, except for the giant baby-monster at the end -- that nearly ruined it for me. I liked all of the practical effects except for that one, which was so fake looking that it popped my suspension of disbelief like a bubble. Character development overall was subpar. The performance of the villain was the highlight, and he delivered some compelling dialogue that explained it enough. I liked the extradimensional aspect, and how that whole sub-basement turned out to be an extradimensional space that closed off after the gate was shut.
The idea of people transformed into monsters who wanted to kill themselves, but were unable to, was a good one -- as shown with that scene showing the thing repeatedly pounding its head onto a spike. That was effectively disturbing! And yet -- shot guns and axes seemed to work at killing them... So I'm not sure why the spike wouldn't.

This type of situation, generically, where a thoughtful movie (or long book) doesn't sort out always confounds me. What is the common denominator? I always think that maybe it was another party's idea and that party is gone (dead or what not).
Maybe its budget oriented where the person only thinks in visual effects resolves and can't play it off screen subtle.
