I'm looking forward to this. i had zero expectations for the first movie, and ended up really enjoying it. Not sure they'll be able to duplicate the vibe and avoid the 'been there' factor.

Over the weekend I bought all four John Wick movies on Blu-Ray. I watched the first three movies at Brian's in the past and I really enjoyed them. I wanted to watch the first three again before starting Chapter 4. I just re-watched the first one and I was thinking about what makes these movies work. They are unapologetic about being simple action movies with simple plots (survive/revenge), top notch stunt work, attention to detail and stylish backgrounds. The other side of it is the world building with the Continental, assassins' code, the High Table, etc. which becomes grander and more interesting as the movies go along.
It's like these movies were custom made for anyone who ever said "I liked the ideas and concepts but there just wasn't enough action."

A criticism of the John Wick movies is that they get increasingly cartoony as they go on. They feel like video games. Video games have always been influenced by movies, but we are living in an era in which the influence works the other way, as well. Something I notice about characters in the background -- the extras, like the dancers, drivers or other civilians -- is that they don't react realistically to the guns and the fighting (they keep dancing, for example). That seems very video-gamey. And one could argue there is a D&D influence in there with high level characters who can easily defeat dozens of low level types ganging up them. When I mention that it also feels like a throw back to the old Hong Kong movies... They actually have a "blind master" martial artist in Chapter 4. Come on!
On a positive note, the John Wick movies become increasingly stylish and bold. The stunts, camera work and visuals get better with each movie. John Wick 4 is just a beautiful movie, with the angles, lighting, colors, and the backgrounds... They put a lot of work into that, and it shows.
