Since we couldn't play on the last Game Night, I hosted a Lovecraftian-themed movie night and we watched FROM BEYOND (1986) and DAGON (2001). Randy brought FROM BEYOND and Mark brought DAGON. Were they any good? No, not really. Most of the time when I try to give horror movies another chance, I end up disappointed. It's just a 90% crap genre. I can only watch B-horror if I am with a group of friends.
One day, there will be a high quality Lovecraft movie... One day... When the stars are right.

Yeah, that director Stuart Gordon's take on Lovecraft is so forced its almost as if he's been given cliffnotes and he takes the name "Lovecraft" at face value to literally mean a mix of witchcraft and sex.
I remember an interview in a magazine with him in the 1990's (Cinefantastique?) where he sounded illiterate enough that it seemed he couldn't even read back the interview in the magazine.

I haven't seen them since they were new. At the time I had a much higher tolerance for B-quality horror movies. I don't know if I could make it all the way through now. They always try to do too much with the budget they have. They need to stick to atmosphere, mood, story, instead of trying to go grande and using campy special effects.

I remember sci-fi fantasy/horror in the 80's being premium and not so premium then what I called then "80's Roger Corman" which required you to forgive the entire film usually (there are exceptions to this though like foreign movies and sometimes even movies by Corman.). I think the Stuart Gordon pics would fall in the scale of "not so premium" but falling into the "80's Roger Corman" zone. I'm surprised that there are still movies out there that never even transferred to DVD much less blu-ray. Quick search. Omigod SORCERESS is on blu-ray? It wasn't even on DVD! The lets rip off the soundtrack from BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS to make the greatest fantasy ever made!!!
