Maylin (12th level M-U) and his henchmen ran into one of these last night. I forgot how tough they can be, 65% magic resistence, +3 or better weapons to hit, etc. It was in a magical prison, so it couldn't use the ethereal, astral/summoning abilities, and it was still rough. It started with 2 segments of surprise, so that didn't help, two magic missiles before the party could react. Ray of enfeeblement on the barbarian as they closed to attack. polymorphed into a snake to escape the rope of entanglement, multiple spells fizzling on its magic resistence before finally being taken out by a few feeble blows from the barbarian (no +3 weapons in the party, but the barbarian's special ability allowed him to hit the hag) and a successful magic missile.

I got a kick out of watching the cocky, "Rope the bitch", turn into talk of retreat.

Level VII monster on par with type I-III demons, succubi, old and some very old dragons, spectre (nazgul), giant slug, mezzodaemon, bone and horned devils, umber hulks, to name a few. Based on the random encounter scale, mostly found on the the 9th to 11th level but can be very rarely found as early as the 5th level of a dungeon.
Hags are definitely a fave of mine.

Yeah, they ate a nasty combination of special abilities, especially the magic resistence. 65% is very high.

I never really brough the Scarlet Brotherhood into my campaign before, but I've been using them recently, with ties to the priests of Nerull, and daemons, and Dark Druids by extension. The night hags fit very nicely into this angle.

I've used the Scarlet Brotherhood but I think the last time was the end of the 90's. Even though I have an open-dimension policy on the main world I haven't had any pure Gygax Greyhawk "guests" yet!
BTW, I do have an NPC religious "brotherhood" that can call to mind a Gygaxian layout but even the name is coincidence. This group is an old one that I left behind because I thought it was in poor taste amongst the buttoned-down people that I was getting off the streets as players in the early 90's but looking back it was pure fantasy that was good. Just not something you could put in a Lorraine Williams package and say to the players to pick it as a background choice. They are not evil evil and they don't include the monk class but rather they are widely accepted in the city and frown on thievery.

Nor uglier follow the Night-Hag, when call'd In secret, riding through the Air she comes Lur'd with the smell of infant blood, to dance With Lapland Witches, while the labouring Moon Eclipses at thir charms.

The party opted to leave the night hag level because it was getting too dangerous with all the undead and their special abilities. They took the steps down to the 8th level, and in the first room, on the first round of combat, the fighter got swallowed by a purple worm. They rescued him though.

I could have swore that night hag painting came up recently that was an illustration from that quote from PARADISE LOST.
