Scott, remind me how spells and initiative work again.
If you are casting a spell, you refer to the casting time, of course. But if you win -- or lose -- initiative, how does that interact with the casting time? In particular when the casting time is in segments.

Generally, your initiative result (since I do lowest roll wins) determines on what segment your casting begins. The required number of segments are spent casting, and then your spell is cast. This is the same whether you win or lose initiative. Example: Party Initiative: 1, Monster initiative 3 Spell caster casting a 3 segment spell. Casting would begin at segment 1. Segments 1, 2, and 3 would be spent casting. The monsters would get their attacks on segment 3. The spell would take effect at the start of segment 4, if the caster wasn't hit by a monster attack.

Thanks. I like that. Is that by the book, or your house rule/adaptation?

That is one version of ,as close, to by-the-book as you can get.
