My aunt gave me her LOTR set which came in a red sleeve box and someone got me a sort of fucked up black set which is wayyy older in a flea market in some butthole state before the internet. Im going down to the dungeon to the pull them out... Here they are: The red box from my Aunt who gave that to me in 1983 was from 1978. That seems about right. The black one was from a flea market someone gave me as a Xmas gift in the mid-90's, they assumed it was perhaps an American original. It says 1965. Both say Houghton Mifflin which means they're U.S. versions. I've read the red box numerous times but never touched the black one. I had one of those abstract covered THE HOBBIT paperbacks but that like so many other paperbacks of Tolkien were never returned. Heres some more oddball Tolkien books: The Tolkien Companion I found in a used bookstore in Virginia a few years ago but the rest have been on my shelf since before I started playing D&D in 1981.

I saw The recently, with my soon-to-be 11-yo daughter - getting her to go was an achievement in itself!
We both really enjoyed it. I just take these films as they come - they're never going to be perfect, and I'll take a good yarn over nothing at all.

I just watched it in HD video on demand in surround sound and it was nowhere near the theater experience. It just looked like a regular movie. Like night and day.
The thing that really grated this time around was the dwarves in Rivendell. That was heartbreaking that they didn't take the opportunity to show the appealing side of Elrond. And the vegetarianism garbage just made me want to vomit!
