I heard of the Robert Rodriguez one but Disney/Pixar? I don't know Disney already trashed Tarzan for me. I can't even imagine Tars Tarkas being a comic foil! Disney has really slumped overall in the last few decades. When I went to Disney World, they gutted my all time favorite "Twenty Thousand Leagues" ride for a Princess Ariel the Mermaid meet and greet session, I was shattered. I think Tarzan needs a major blood transfusion before anybody embarks on another Burroughs outing. Tarzan was my idol when I was a kid with his knife-weilding boldness. They need to do what they did for James Bond and do a redo thats "less cruising music" and more "nuts and bolts action". Then John Carter will be entering right into the zone it needs to be in.

This thing changed so much in the past years, and now Disney is doing it, and I'm guessing it will be a kid's movie. If you look at Pixar's history, could it be anything else?

I'm a fan of a lot of the Pixar films, but I don't expect this, if it gets made, to capture the original pulp feel at all.

Some interesting info on early attempts at trying to make a movie ~ well except the idea of Tom Cruise as Carter, that would have been awful! Speaking of Carter, it appears the movie will be called John Carter of Mars rather than Princess. I guess either way will work as long as the studio mentions that ERB wrote Tarzan. Frank Frazetta as production designer should help. And finally, here's a bit of trivia about the original story and ERB's pseudonym: www.imdb.com/title/tt0401729/trivia

I like Pixar's stuff, but this just smacks (imho) of cartoon-style movie. I know one can have CGI films that look real, but I expect the worst. A combination Lord of the Rings-style + CGI venture would appeal to me most of all.
Just brought this back, too ~ one of my friends had the John Carter, Warlord of Mars boardgame, nearly 30 years ago.. Seeing "Tars Tarkas" up there reminded me, and then names like "Carthoris" and the like... Good times.

Yeah, Frazetta's last film outing as designer for Bakshi's FIRE AND ICE is great. I can't think of anything that tops it for fantasy cartoons. Bakshi is a little insane especialy with WIZARDS but he really topped his LORD OF THE RINGS with FIRE AND ICE. Even though F&I didn't carry the preconditioned immenseness of the Tolkien series, for what it is, an original short story, F&I was pretty damned good.

They know all the characters and act like I should know them all by name. I had to let my daughter watch DRILLBIT TAYLOR because "That guy is Lightning McQueen!". Although, I had to cover her eyes for half the picture!

MONSTERS INC they've watched so many times its ridiculous. Something about it just makes them stop what they're doing and watch it.
The Pixar movie video game adaptations aren't a big hit with these kids though but most movie adaptations flop anyway. Except they played LEMONY SNICKET and WILLY WONKA to death.

Hmm, odd thing. I pulled out the book the other day and was looking at it thinking that I read it years ago. And I have the 2nd one (Gods of Mars) in the series, so that usually means I've read the 1st in a series. But, the book was mint with no creases on the binding. So . . I'm wondering how do I know so much about Barsoom and some of the action in the books. I began to wonder if I had read John Carter comics way back when and I think I did so - as I found this info on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarsoomSo I either read some of the comics or read the stories in the "Funnies"!! Anyone else seen or read JC/Barsoom comics from back then?
