Does anyone really stand out as a great author of modules, other than Gary Gygax and Rob Kuntz?
I've heard the name Paul Jacquays tossed out there for Caverns of Thracia and Dark Tower from Judges Guild. Have any of you guys ever played any of these?
How about Tom Moldvay, who did X1 The Isle of Dread, X2 Castle Amber, B3 Palace of the Silver Princess, B4 The Lost City, and A2 Secret of the Slavers Stockade? Any of these any good?
Lawrence Schick only did two modules: S2 White Plume Mountain and A4 In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords... Dave Arneson (with a lot of editing) isn't bad, Len Lakofka is good, but again, too few samples. Graeme Morris of the UK?
I dunno, any other ideas? Of course, lots of people like Tracy Hickman and Carl Sargent and Monte Cook, but I'm looking for real, good old-school. Regards.

I liked Moldvay's CASTLE AMBER and some of his articles weren't too shabby.
Allen Hammack besides Ghost Tower and Aerie did some work on the Greyhawk campaign sets so he's alright in my book.
Jacquays seems to have been like a barnacle back then, he illustrated the Nehwon Mythos in case nobody here remembers but his later illustration on newer RPGs seems to have went south into a more Forgotten Realm-s-y style for some reason. I think that he has a website but I can't seem to find it. He's a video game co. employeee I think.

Yeah, CASTLE AMBER is one that comes up quite a bit. Based on Clark Ashton Smith, is it? I'm reading CAS now, but the Averoigne stories are a bit harder for me to come by. I have the Ballantine collections of the Zothique, Hyperborea, and Xiccarph stories that Lin Carter put together, which are great. But it looks like Carter never got around to doing an Averoigne collection, though he meant to.
Anyway, it seems like most of Moldvay's other work was modifying the work of others. He's listed as second co-author on most things. Regards.

The Castle part of CASTLE AMBER is Moldvay's but it has tie-ins that let you reenact the Averoigne stories. The castle itself was somewhat fun. So I have to give him that.
However I won't give him any "edition author status" as seems to be the trend these days.
Because I don't believe he intended that basic to be anything other than chopped up for kids and the final credit goes directly to Gary.

Jaquays also wrote a good chunk of Griffin Mountain for RQ. His site is at www.jaquays.com/paul/index.htmlI like Tom Moldvay's work. He also wrote the Lords of Creation game and several adventures for it, published by AH. He's my last hope to be the author of "Treasures of the Dragon Queen"....

I like Graeme Morris for a more gritty and low-magic feel. But there are very few great adventure writers even though there might be many that have done some decent efforts. In my view, adventures are the epitome of AD&D creations, even moreso than rulebooks.
