or home spun super dungeons in general.
I have a few in my campaign, but I'll focus on my version of the Greyhawk Dungeons.
My version is quite like the Abyss. Some levels (layers) are under the control of some lord. Some lords control multiple levels. Some levels are chaotic free-for-alls. Many levels have ways of spitting you out into some alien world, including THE Abyss. And lets not forget the demons.
Most levels have sub-levels. The encounters on the core levels are often quite random. The sub levels are where the I build on specific themes. Many modules that I don't think fit quite right into the main Greyhawk campaign can be reached via portals found in my dungeon. The Lost City, Castle Amber, Ravenloft, etc. I also place Rob's Maure Castle levels in my Greyhawk Dungeon, and use Maure Castle more like as described in the Gord books. There are other portals that lead to different spots across the Flanaess.
Many notable NPCs can be encountered there. Party A and Party B both adventure there, as well as Nell Nimblefingers, Dimwill, Drudge, etc. Many NPCs from the Rogues Gallery, and the pre-gens from old modules can be located in Greyhawk city as NPCs to fill a party's ranks, or encountered in the dungeons.
I use Greyhawk Ruins material, but far far far from as-is. Mostly because I'm too lazy to develop so many maps, and as filler encounters. As is, I think Greyhawk Ruins is garbage.
I also base some level maps off of other old module level maps. There's a great stone face and a gem man.
There's more, but I'd also like to hear how others have designed their dungeons.
