How many people here have actually played mythus? What are your general impressions of the system.

I'm still new to the game, and so far I've only ran a few test encounters. I like it so far. One of the biggest problems with learning the rules is it seems EGG went out of his way to distance his game from D&D with the terminology, and as a result there's a huge amount of new acronyms to learn that make the rules a little more confusing than they need to be. One of the harder books to find is Mythus Prime, a stripped down 'basic' version of the rules. If you want to learn this game, I'd recommend trying to track a copy down. Start play with this book, and add rules from the main Mythus book as you get familiar with them. Scott

Isn't the first chapter of Mythus bascially the mythus prime.

No, it is not the same. The basic rules from the main Mythus book are too stripped down. A character created with those rules wouldn't look like a HP for the game. Your traits aren't the same. The Mythus Prime book was written with a smoother transition to the main Mythus rules in mind. Scott

Just got Mythus Prime in the mail, $3.99 on ebay from Crazy Egor's. Interesting so far. The first section of the book is maps and the gazeteer - odd to see that presented before character creation.

Once you get used to the nomenclature the game goes quickly. The characteristics scheme does take some getting used to, but once you are they actually make sense. Unlike some games I could name.

How would you compare Mythus to AD&D ?
Same feeling ? Same adventures and goals ?
I have the Dangerous Journeys book (the complete one) since a long time but I was too lazy to try it, looks very complex.
I've read about the 20 first pages and that's all before I began sleeping... ;D

The feel is very different, AD&D is class-based, Mythus is skill based. The hadest part about Mythus is learning a new vocabulary. Reading the material does give you the old AD&D feeling though. Scott

Think that's odd, in Roma Imperious (Hinterwelt Enterprises) the game mechanics don't appear until page 193.

Getting this back on track, my impression of the game is that it's aimed more at intrigue and old fashioned Saturday matinee B movie and serial adventure.
Combat is deadly. With a Special Success and a Strike Location of Ultra Vital a sword thrust. can kill the average HP (24 points (4d6 at full damage) times 4 for the location. Against a Physical Trait of 90) With skill even a knife can kill with one shot.
True story:
I'm running a game for three guys at a convention one time. To make a long story short, at one point they encountered a couple of Mythus zombies. One player was thinking D&D zombies, and gloating over the fact his Theurgist HP had a P Trait of 80 and a suit of chain.
He takes a swing at one zombie, only to miss. The zombie hit him. Ultra Vital location. Grand total of 72 points of Physical Damage. The player learned two very valuable lessons. One, you can get hurt in this game. Two, mail isn't worth much against blunt weapons.
After that he let the other two engage in the ars militaire. ;D

What Alan says is quite on the mark: my players quickly learned (at the expense of a few) that combat is a bit more realistic, if you'll pardon the phrase. Once the JM gets the hang of it, it bogs down no more than D&D. The most time-consuming part is character (HP) creation; after that it's cake for the players! . If you ever get Indiana-way, Scott, stop on by and I'll rustle up a couple of players and we'll have at-- and I'll show you why my players fear to hear the name of the dimensional-travelling 'Howards'! ^__^

Thanks for the kind offer. A little Mythus (or Unhallowed, or Changeling) and a little absinth sounds good to me. Scott

Geez--If we could get you and some of the lads from the boards together for even one adventure, it would be a monumental event!! All the beer and Frito-Lay snacks one could want, some home-brew chili, Pizza Hut pizza and an adventure perused and augmented by Gary and Rob--maybe Rob would even lead the gamemastering! (DROOL!!) Gronan here to indulge in beer-chugging and bawdy songs! And Gene here to trade barbs with the Pun Demon to keep the adventure light-hearted... [Pun Demon... Wake up!!] Crap! I was dreamin' again!! ^__^

That sounds great, except the Pizza Hut pizza part. I’ve heard that you can’t get good pizza or doughnuts in Indiana. Scott

Ahhh, and we can arrange for vast quantities of libations of finest sort and pizza made to order! Perhaps we should actually start planning to have a Con of sorts in a year or two for grognards---GrognaCon or some such... Hmmm....
