I just started watching the first two episodes because they didn't cancel Netflix yet. There is a "Lovecraftish" if not Lovecraftian vibe so far. I see that 2 or 3 episodes are direct HPL adaptations but didn't get there yet.
The first one was a 1990's period piece but it has modern creep in there with some weird PC signaling that would never happen in real life that makes the lead (Tim "O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?" Blake Nelson) seems to be way off his usual appealing persona.
The second one is a more HPL feel in era at least based on the 1936 short story by Henry Kuttner "Graveyard Rats".
So far the monsters of both seemed pretty cool.

3rd episode is the short story that I have been long talking about but forgot. Anyone recall me mentioning a short story that I believed inspired the 1987 movie THE HIDDEN with Kyle McLachlan? The story was THE AUTOPSY (1980) by Michael Shea: isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?49726So weird that I was ecstatic watching the episode. Stars F. Murray Abraham and it was pretty decent adaptation from what I recall from reading that in the early 1980's.

I just checked out episode 6 DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE where Del Toro specifically reiterates in the preamble introduction that this is what you would expect in an H.P. Lovecraft story or something like that. Which, after watching, must mean that we are back to taking Stuart Gordon's illiterate HPL adaptation films as spot on because this is bad. The writing was cringe level 100. There is a "Horton Hears A Who" sized speck of an HPL story in this mess. It is such a blatantly modern 1930's that it doesn't even make logical sense. There are 4 non-story "magic saviors" in a row that may give the writer a lifetime achievement award for worst adaptation ever. Nyarl, who is the hub of the tale, doesn't even appear. And just forgot about the lost city and Azathoth. Sad. I don't know if I can continue.

As an aside, the CGI "Brown Jenkins" is so fucking terrible. They even PCed him as "Jenkin Brown". I wanted to watch the Peter Weller episode but its like going back inside to get raped again.

I thought that I mentioned this but the host of this show seems really unhealthy looking. Its like Mr Creosote from Monty Python's THE MEANING OF LIFE (1983) level unhealthy. He can barely speak.
