This is something I've been interested in for a while, the whole series really. I finally bought it. There are original scans and a 5E conversion, that I'm not really interested in. The stuff I am interested in is the commentary from old TSR folks, additional wilderness material, fully fleshed out Nulb, and fully fleshed out Elemental Nodes. I like the new art. Can't wait to get reading.

It looks like they've added to it in logical and useful ways. But I have to ask: since Hasbro/Wizards always touted how compatible 5e is with 1e, why does a conversion need to be done at all?

It's an easier conversion than 3E or 4E was, but there's still some work. There's also some 5E content (classes, races, spells, feats, etc.) that weren't available in 1E. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, so not sure how the 5E-ed it up.

Interesting find in the commentary: Dave Arneson played the Trader in Gary's original home campaign, and the map, illustration, and equipment list were based on his notes.

Another interesting bit of trivia that I didn't know, when Gary was running the ToEE game, it was not his "home" game, it was the TSR officer game.

Rannos Davl
Dav(e)l Arn(e)son
Yeah, I guess that was there all along...
I suppose this office game must have been held at the "old TSR offices" on Williams Street -- where the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum is now -- and must have happened before EGG and Arneson had their falling out and Arneson left TSR. So, I'm guessing early 1976 for this campaign? I wonder if Arneson was one of the player characters who set up shop there, or if he was running an NPC to interact with the other players.

And Gremag is Dave Megarry, but no mention of him playing in the original campaign. Yeah, 1976 was when he was running the campaign. The commentary just says Dave played the trader, no mention on whether he had classes like the NPC. With Dave A's background it would not be surprised if he was just the trader focused more on intrigue. By the time the adventure was published Dave and Gary had their falling out and that shows in the descriptions.

Players assuming the roles of villagers is very ‘Braunstein’!
