I think a lot about the inspiration for a lot of the stuff EGG included in his campaign, King Kong, Wonderland, Vance, etc. Some of it was what Gary liked, some of it was included for the benefit of specific players. I’ve done a little bit of this, and have had a few ideas for other stuff that is still bouncing around in my head. Recently I’ve been thinking about introducing some material related to Stephan King’s Dark Tower series and using Murlynd as the connection. Murlynd in his dimensional travels became Gunslinger a la Roland and has some experience with Mid-World, which could be accessed through the Greyhawk Dungeons somehow. I’m not thinking full Dark Tower plot, but an EX like jaunt through Mid-World maybe?

I've done so much "rip off" material some just flat brain dead "Hey, its Gandalf!" that I don't think it harmed anything.

The EX1, EX2 and I6 modules definitely open the door for that sort of thing, so I'd say if you think it will be fun, go for it. If you have some Stephen King fans as players, they'll probably love it. Murlynd does seem like a perfect fit for the The Gunslinger universe, doesn't he? I was just thinking of Don Kaye, since I listened to the WHEN WE WERE WIZARDS podcast in which Mary Gygax mentioned how his nicknamed was "Hondo" when he was a kid due to his admiration of John Wayne!

I think if done right it can be a great addition to the game. Ernie still talks about his adventures when he recognized the Dirdir, Wonderland, etc. You could go too far, but when done right I think the players really enjoy the change of pace and interacting in a sense with some interest from real life.

The similarities between Roland and Murlynd make it pretty easy, western gunslingers who are also knights. Eric/Plasolder is a big King/Gunslinger fan.

And then there is the fourth wall break down...
Nightblade: Hey, hey, hey, look who brought the Mountain Dew! DM: Yeah! Galstaff: Right on! Nightblade: (singing) Fly by night of Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew for you... DM: Galstaff, as you are standing in a dirt road swinging a very unmagical sword, you see the strangest sight. A halfling thief is walking towards you singing "Fly by Night" Galstaff: Nightblade! Nightblade: Hey, hey, hey DM: It's Nightblade the halfling thief, and he's carrying a 12-pack of Mountain Dew. Galstaff: No way! His character's carrying Mountain Dew too? DM: If I roll a 10 or above, then yes. (rolls dice) Eleven.
(From Dead Alewives comedy sketch "Dungeons and Dragons" 1996)
Seriously, I did do a lot of that mid-80s with a Dungeon Master character that is why there is that death dealer/nazgul in the group character drawings where the character would talk directly to the players.
In regards to flat out rips or cross genre:
I had a Diablo/Warcraft crossover. The Patchwork Secret Wars like world had Conan, Gandalf, Treebeard and Elric and others. I had Merlin as a recurring character. I had a Barrier Peaks-like adventure in a derelict spaceship turned fortress. A time travel into the 1930s and current (1980s). Trip to the moon and a derelict spaceship had aliens (pre-ALIENS sequel). My friend did a time warp to Camelot for a joust. Many forays into the age of the dinosaurs and "caveman times". In general there is an interdimensional and interplanetary presence that is lurking in the background especially from the "Planet of the Ghouls" and "Night World" that I mentioned briefly in the BROKEN CASTLE. I had the Flash Gordon "lion men" but they were more of an adaptation. The Beast and the Slayers from Krull. One of my main villains, I described as Willie Nelson as a wizard. One of my NPCs is George Harrison trapped in time.

I have Slimer from Ghostbusters as a possible random encounter and an It zone where you can see red balloons floating down the halls, dead party members can be encountered, sewer opening type things at the bottom of dungeon walls and manhole covers. The sewer entrance and manhole covers access a sub dungeon level where a Pennywise-esque demon can be encountered.

I never really got into THE DARK TOWER* series. I do not believe I had used Stephen King in general for anything except perhaps in general flavor. Perhaps from the films. Creepshow. Salem's Lot.
