I've always liked this character, but there are two very different versions of him. In EX2, he is an 18th level magic-user. The 83 boxed set gives him the abilities of a 12th level paladin, a 12th level magic-user, and a 12th level illusionist with psionic abilities thrown in. Has anybody used Murlynd in their game? Scott

Actually there's three versions---the one in Dragon 71 is substantially different from the other two as well....

I used Murlynd as an NPC once... Woodstock had found a contrivance that was basically a motorized chair while exploring Baba Yaga's Hut. He took said object out of the Hut and it no longer functioned, but he eventually ran into Murlynd who has that interesting ability to make tech fuction for himself...

...and what happened then GT? And, in general, did EGG and RJK use the quasi-deities and heros of GH in the ways that we've come to see them used in the published version of the setting---i.e., was Murlynd always a gun-toting paladin/MU/etc.?

Well, Gary embellished Murlynd (published) in honor of Don; but he was the tech-loving guy, IIRC. As to Woodstock, he asked Murlynd the secret of making tech function and was sent off on a quest. The bard had experienced tech earlier in the S3 module and wanted more. I didn't allow tech to function more than a few hundred yards from the S3 spaceship, the "Beagle" (Dave Arneson's vessel, which I placed as the Lost City of the Gods up in the land of Black Ice/Blackmoor; or when wielded by Murlynd. This was back in 1988 or so--Woodstock had been around for 9 years at that jucture, so we were looking for something different for him. He eventually did acquire the ability to make tech function for him... and then we moved him into OP status (aka: NPC) in my Mythus campaign. Weird times, those... ^__^

Oh, and Baba Yaga had taken an interest in the handsome bard, and having caught him in her Hut, allowed him to live after he performed some deadly tasks for her. The other option was to become a "paramour" of Baba's. For some reason, Woodstock chose the deadly tasks... ^__^ I'm still not forgiven for that one to this day... (Scott--if Tony makes it to Geneva Con, ask him "how Baba Yaga is doing", and watch the expression on his face!)

SPOON! I remember someone (my brother?) finding UNEARTHED ARCANA's Murlynd's Spoon and having it for years, years and years. Then when they finally needed it (trapped in a dimensional pocket) they didn't have the necessary empty container (dish, bowl, etc.) to use it and starved to death before the rescue. Don't you hate when players try to cajole their way into using something a certain way thats completely unreasonable? Ugh! There is the opposite effect on some DMs too. I've seen DMs that are so conditioned by that kind of player behavior that they never want to hear anything reasonable at all. That probably irks the shit out of me even more!

Hey remember when Rob mentioned on his forum about writing up some stuff about Murlynd and Don Kaye. Did he ever do that? I think he was going to put it somewhere on the main PPP site.

I have always wondered if Don simply had "Merlin" on his character sheet, and it was only later that Gary memorialized the character by modifying the name (I've seen it spelled as both Merlynd and Murlynd) and jazzing up the description to make him a bit more interesting and unique (such as in TD 71 article and/or the 83 box set). I'd always assumed the EX2 version is probably closer to what the original character really was (just a magic-user), but with levels boosted up as befits a personage of such legendary status.
Anyone know what level Murlynd actually made it to, as Don's PC? Or anything about that character, as it was originally played?

The Fraternal Order of the Khans of the Orient was a club Gary founded when he was a kid, btw.

I kinda assumed Don ran a M-U and then Gary added the paladin as an in-reference to Paladin from "Have Gun, Will Travel", which Don apparently liked...

Haha, my buddie's paladin in my game is called Boone.
We are the TV generation after all.
Heh, and Gary certainly knew about the knight (chess) on Paladin's card.
Back to EX2 . . . "when men on the chessboard, get up . . " or something like that from Jefferson's White Rabbit.
Heh, that's all I hear when reading that module!!
The opening guitar licks are some of the all time best in classic rock!
Grace's voice is superb on those early albums. She rocked my world back then.
;D
