I am listening to the audiobook and musing on how much it influenced Jack Vance. In that context it seems like the template for many Vance stories: young man has terrible injustice done to him, survives, is captured, escapes, travels far, learns a secret, becomes amazingly competent, returns to confront his enemies and right all wrongs… or at least most of them.
Chateau d’If is one of the few Vance stories I haven’t read. Now, I have to track it down…

Chateau d’If is one of the few Vance stories I haven’t read. Now, I have to track it down… I listened to this one when I had to travel a lot for work. I really enjoyed it.
