I watched this last weekend because it was based on a story published in 1973 by John Bellairs, who also wrote THE FACE IN THE FROST (1969). Since the latter was in Appendix N in the DMG, I sought it out and read it several years ago. Both stories have a similar tone, being YA fantasy with magic, horror and whimsy all mixed together. I can imagine this movie being made by people looking for a property similar to Harry Potter, and in a way it feels like proto-Harry Potter. Jack Black and Cate Blanchett worked well together and made it entertaining enough.

I forgot to watch that because I was in "Jack Black is in everything" mode at the time and I thought that I saw it but I guess that I didn't.
