I did this two weeks ago where I spent 4 hours chatting with "Settembrini" (Usually on Knights and Knaves Alehouse) and his cohosts in Germany on their podcast PESA Projektgruppe Ergebnisoffenheit, Selbermachen und Abenteuer (GOOGLE translate: Project group Open-ended, Do-it-yourself and Adventure) pesa-nexus.de/2021/09/22/episode-26-gene-weigel-english/I haven't listened yet but its 4 hours.

Well, that's pretty cool, Gene. I've only listened to a few minutes so far, but it seems like you have some German fans and they remember your early, controversial days on the internet. I think the first time I became aware of you was your "Wild Bill Hackock" persona! I remember your St Cuthbert and St Trowbane write ups and illustrations which I liked right away. There were so many flame wars and arguments in the late 90's! I vaguely remember some pro and anti Gygax arguments, with Gygax fans being called "fanboys" with older gaming material being accused of not being as sophisticated. Very silly stuff, as I recall. Here's something to make everyone feel old. Nitescreed -- one of those internet firebrands of the 90's -- posted his essay later titled "What puts the Grey in the Hawk" on the GREYtalk Mailing List in 1996... That was over 25 years ago... A longer span of time between when it was posted and when the Greyhawk Folio was published (16 years previously in 1980) or even when original D&D was published (22 years previously in 1974)! So, those flame wars between the "new" and "old" Greyhawkers/AD&D players really were a long time ago! www.geocities.ws/jsage_1974/Greathawk.htmI wonder what the kids are arguing about these days...

I vaguely remember that name. Its weird seeing someone describe FR as a flavor much less a viable franchise but that was the mentality. Sort of being next in line in some kind of outer rim of the TSR hierarchy. Do they still feel the same way?

The Germans knew you from what I thought were some pretty obscure things -- the "Gene Weigel's Dungeon" videos you posted showing live play from your campaign around 2006-2008 including the one with you wearing a poncho and singing a Willie Nelson song -- and that blog article comparing you to Ron Jeremy (I was thinking it was the Big Lebowski but that was from the comments section, not the article itself). Those videos weren't even up for very long. kellri.blogspot.com/2008/12/gene-weigels-dungeon.html

I hope I don't have to sing "Pancho and Lefty" at GaryCon...

Well that wrapped up kind of negatively but it was cool for a while. I think that I need to avoid TSR/Gygax talk in the future it's like a time bomb.
