Last night was the first time our live gaming group got together in over a year. It was great to see everyone again! Six players showed up, and we started a new AD&D campaign set in the World of Greyhawk, 575 CY. Their characters started as old friends getting together at the Oak and Shield tavern in the town of Hochoch. The two paladins in the party were given one last order after becoming freemen: go north about 20 miles to the village of Farstead and help the lord of the manor. Their friends decided to accompany them. The characters were:
Aeray, 1st level human paladin [Randy]
Osoric, 1st level human paladin [Brian]
Balul, 1st level mountain dwarf thief [Ray]
Krak Makkenak, 1st level mountain dwarf fighter [Mark]
Father Lortmill, 1st level human cleric of Pelor [Eric]
McGalen, 1st level half-orc fighter [Wes]
Flocktime 15, 575 CY. Party gathers in the Oak and Shield tavern in Hochoch, and receives mission to help the manor lord of Farstead.
Flocktime 16, 575 CY. They travel all day on foot, and convince a farmer to let them sleep in his barn in exchange for Balul's bagpipe music.
Flocktime 17, 575 CY. They arrive in Farstead, and the lord of the manor, Sir Calyton, explains the situation with the murder of the local village magician, Eorl Flan, about a week ago. This was followed the next day by the arrest of the elf, Falrik, and his subsequent trial and stealing of the magic sword, Annacon. The elf got away, invisibly. Sir Calyton offers them a reward for returning Annacon and Falrik to Farstead. While in the manor lord's service, the party is able to stay at his manor with free room and board, and also receive healing from the village cleric who is another priest of Pelor. The party does some investigation of the mystery, and hears that an elf was seen by a peddler near the supposedly haunted mansion of Kanos, about 6 miles away.
Flocktime 18, 575 CY. The party goes to the mansion of Kanos, about 6 miles away from Farstead, and begins exploring it. They encounter a camoflauged crab spider, an apparition, and a gray ooze, which does damage to the party as well as destroying some of their metal armor and weapons. After that fight, they decide to return to Farstead to rest and recover spells, as well as buy some new weapons.
Flocktime 19, 575 CY. Party returns to the mansion of Kanos to continue exploring. They find stairs up into the western tower, and find a blasted area with bones and charred bits of wood and while examining they are attacked by a giant lizard, which they kill but only after taking quite a bit of damage. They explore the library and Balul finds and reads a cursed scroll which paralyzes him (no save), and so they take the dwarf up into the western tower and barricade it to rest and recover spells. They set a watch and do not get any encounter.
Flocktime 20, 575 CY. They get up and begin exploring the mansion again, and set off a magical trap that temporarily blinds some of them. After it wears off, they come to an intersection with the statue of a gargoyle which seems to animate and walk towards them... They withdraw out of house through the front entrance but keeping their eyes on it while the paladin throws an axe at it which goes right through it... an illusion. Back inside, they see the statue of the gargoyle where they found it, unmoved. They explore a living room with a fountain the party is surprised by five stirges who attach to the paladins and so some nasty blood draining, but the party kills them as well. They come to a door where they hear gruff voices loudly arguing, which the dwarves recognize as hobgoblin. Osoric tries to kick the door open to surprise them, but fails. After a second attempt, the hobgoblins are ready but the party wisely stays at the doorway to limit how many hobgoblins they have to fight at one time, and after a few rounds they manage to slay all four [That's where we paused the adventure, since it was around midnight... To be continued in two weeks!].
