Maylin and his henchmen have returned to the Wild Coast (Narwell area), and he’s getting ready to try to build a castle again. He tried once before, but the die rolls were terrible and the area was complete monster infested and he ended up retreating, but he did end up with a small flock of hippogriffs. The hex is is planning on claiming is one hex north, and then northeast of Narwell on the edge of the Gnarley. Right now he’s in town recruiting men-at-arms.

Sometimes I love using the random charts. I decided to use the random terrain generator for this. The very first hex I checked, where he was planning on building his castle, already has a castle in it: a large concentric castle, deserted (monster therein).

Ernie once complained that after Tenser built his castle, Gary rolled for all of his henchmen to see if they would move into the castle or quit. I hadn't considered that. I do have a house rule that I use whenever a henchman reaches name level. I roll to see if the continue to serve as henchmen, continue to associate with the PC as an equal party member, or decide to leave altogether. Maylin's former henchman Mirzod (a monk) falls into the second category. He will usually agree to accompany Maylin on adventures if he wants him to go, but sometimes he will be doing his own thing.

Yes, part of the fun in DMing is keeping some things random. That way, even you don't always know what will be found in the wilderness or how henchmen will react to changing situations! The random charts can also help with writer's block. If you aren't sure what to put in a region, roll on the random charts and it almost always spurs the imagination.

Yes, I will often use the charts, and then what rolls out is usually not the exact roll, but something inspired by it. Like in this case, I'm not about to let Maylin assume control of a deserted, large concentric castle after defeating the lone giant skunk guardian, which is what the dice have declared. But letting him takeover a small fixer upper after he defeats the demon that escaped from some artifact and slaughtered all of the previous inhabitants might be doable.
