Mind flayers are another monster that require some prep work to do them justice and run them well. G3 gives you their hit points, and that's it. There's a lot you could miss DMing them on the fly. 90% magic resistance (vs. 11th level casters). Jastra, and Corbek are 10th level now, so that's 95% magic resistance, so basically spell proof. The monsters will need to get lucky for the mind blast to work against the PCs. Some of the NPCs are more vulnerable. I think their domination psionic ability is probably a bigger threat, especially if one of the party tanks fails a save.

I know what you mean. The G&D series along with Q1 were all meant to be fleshed out. The monsters were there but not much else. I remember those mindflayers; there were a few in D2 as well. I rather figured they would not be traveling alone in that area. Since they had dominance powers, I gave them some enthralled guards (meals). Despite their high MR and psionic powers, they're a bit like one trick ponies. How do you suck out a brain while three other axe wielding loonies are trying to hack you to bits. I think their smart enough to know that.
But interesting as a subject, magic resistance always bothered me a little as a DM. Magic users pay a high price to get to the high levels and the good spells. I always found it a bit of "bad sportsmanship" to hobble their magic just when it's really getting fun. I could understand some low MR, but the MR of Drow and Mindflayers is a bit much (there are gods with lower MR). Chances of immunity yes, but not such good chances.
BTW Nice to meet you.
