They're not tight with their events. You can submit and run anything. I don't mind certain requirements being built into a submission for a contest.

I still have to figure out what to do for the con at this point. I didn't want to run anything. I was hoping to get into a 1E/OD&D game or two. The contest was kind of a motivation to write/complete something fairly short, and after turning it over in my mind for a bit some pieces started falling into place.

I don't want to take it over with requirements for old fans because I don't like dealing with shit that I'm not interested in. That said, Gary's memory is lingering around Gary Con so that is the most likely place for people like us to focus on regardless of official con screwy edition choices which in my opinion is a mistake. Maybe down the road there will be more opportunities for classic official things.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing... One would expect a convention named after Gary Gygax would have an adventure writing contest making use of OD&D/AD&D or another game he designed or at least co-authored. Not to disparage 5e, but there are plenty of other venues for 5e enthusiasts or people who prefer to play "the newest thing."

I'm sure there are some attendance and sponsorship considerations. Luke has established a good relationship with WotC and many 5E personalities. I don't think there's a lack of OD&D or 1E content at the Con. I'm guessing that's the issue. There isn't enough 5E content, and Luke/the Con may be trying to increase it.

I can't fault Luke for that if he is trying to grow the convention. It would be just under $100 to get the three core rulebooks for 5e D&D, which is not a bad investment if you want to write/publish in 5e. But when I leafed through them at the book store, I just wasn't feeling it. Ever since I realized that new editions were more about making money than improving the game, I stopped buying new editions. I'm not against a company trying to make money -- and I completely understand it -- but the new product just doesn't interest me or feel necessary in any way.

The art sucks. There's a lot of the classic pulp and swords & sorcery feel lost in the presentation, but not the potential. There are some 3rd party producers that capture that nicely. EGG's background and idiosyncrasies made his version of the game what it was, and that will always be my favorite. But 5E is the best version of the game since, IMO. As someone who has for years tossed around the idea of writing game material and making a buck or two, I consider it the best option for me.

Yeah, its understandable but I just can't get into it.
I can't figure what to do. Maybe I will tie the release of the blog bit with GaryCon. I ordered a new computer setup with new camera but I'm not sure how good its going to look for a game.

Let me know if you want me to play test it. You'll have to teach me any required details for 5e. Most con games have pregenerated characters to speed things along. Maybe something like a 5 room dungeon would work?

I got the cam yesterday and it looks a lot better than the one that I got for last Gary Con that had made me abort and use the phone. Computer is coming tomorrow. Maybe we can do a test run on some of this shit. I honestly forgot how to use all the "twitch" programs and all that.

I have a pretty good (I think) outline written up for the adventure writing contest, but my 5E chops are definitely not up to snuff to run it at the con, one of the requirements. If anybody knows somebody that would be interested in collaborating, let me know.

Everybody in my regular group uses Apple devices. On most nights I'm happy just using FaceTime. I used Zoom in the past, which I liked, but stopped when they started charging for it. When I want to use floor plans and maps, I use Roll20, which I've gotten comfortable with over time.

I recommend Roll20 as it is still free and it has a dice roller. Roll20 also has visual capabilities that I've never mastered, such as showing maps and art. It is also worth it to learn how to use Discord, as I think some GaryCon events will make use of it. Last year, I played in a Discord game with Jon Hook as the DM, and it was audio only but worked fine. Visuals are nice, but D&D totally does not need them. Let me know if you want help with testing.

They don’t have FaceTime. That’s when we used Zoom.

I got no takers on a 5E collaborator. The adventure I wrote was definitely a con adventure, nothing I’d run in my home game. The background info I wrote for the adventure: Introduction It was nearly three decades ago when agents of the Order of the Warded Grimoire, exploring the depths of a long forgotten dungeon complex in the Drachensgrab Hills, obtained the Daemon Scepter. This powerful, evil artifact was created in Hades by the dread god Incabulos and “gifted” to his priesthood on Oerth as a tool to help create the disasters the evil god revels in. After passing from high priest to high priest, the Scepter eventually vanished, along with the last high priest known to possess it. Centuries later, the Order of the Warded Grimoire discovered the location of the artifact and sent a party of adventurers to retrieve it before it could again become a tool for the servants of Hades. The Order sought to destroy the scepter, but it resisted all attempts to damage it. To keep it safe until a means for its destruction could be discovered, the Order, with supernatural aid, created an extra dimensional vault that could only be reached when three keys that were created in the same ritual were brought together. The keys were given to high ranking members of the Order who then scattered to different locations across the Flanaess to hide them. For almost 30 years possession of the Daemon Scepter remained the Order’s secret, but several weeks ago it was discovered that followers of Incabulos were plotting to obtain the artifact using information provided by a traitor from within the Order. Agents from the Order of the Warded Grimoire are now being sent to retrieve the keys that can open the Daemon Scepter’s vault from their current keepers. The same magic that protects the vault from inter-dimensional intrusion, prevents the keys from being moved in any similar fashion. Believing that prominent members of the order are most likely being watched and/or scried upon, the Order is sending lesser, but capable agents instead.
The Order of the Warded Grimoire This ancient secret society was founded by the followers of the arch-mage Tsojcanth. The Order was established to protect mankind and its allies from the plots and schemes of powerful, evil outsiders and their unending efforts to spread their wicked influence over the world. The Warded Grimoire, an arcane tome written by Tsojcanth, is considered a holy relic. Its contents, kept secret from all but the highest ranking members of the order, are rumored to include powerful spells of both arcane and divine nature as well as a collection of information on beings from the outer planes.
Players’ Background You are all members of the Order of the Warded Grimoire, an ancient, secret society dedicated to the protection of mankind and its allies from the evil beings of the lower planes who desire only death and destruction. Several days ago you were summoned to the city of Monmurg in the Hold of the Sea Princes where you were introduced to each other and informed that you were being sent on an errand. You were to travel to the Village of Fort Ogin to retrieve a key from the merchant Finnius Cionn. No reason for your errand was provided, nor any information on the Key, and any attempts to obtain additional information were unsuccessful. The higher ranking members the order that have assigned you this mission have assured you that obtaining the key and bringing it back to Monmurg should be a simple task. The fact that no higher ranking members of the Order are accompanying you seems to support this. This is, in fact, the first time any of you have been asked to do anything for the Order where you weren’t under the direct supervision of a higher ranking member, and you’re determined to make a good impression while completing this “simple task”.
