I wasn't avoiding this but didn't go out of my way to see it, either, as I heard it was bad. And after seeing DARK PHOENIX (2019), which was bad, I wasn't interested in watching X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. But I watched it the other day and it wasn't bad and had some nice character bits and Easter eggs for comic book fans. Magneto's story was pretty grim, but added some depth to why he is the way he is in the overall franchise. I'd say it was much better than DARK PHOENIX but not as good as X-MEN: FIRST CLASS or X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST which were both excellent. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE leaned pretty heavily into Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence as their biggest stars and they gave good performances, although in retrospect there was no main character in this movie and maybe that is what was missing. Oscar Isaac is a great actor but was buried under layers of makeup and special effects, and often with even his voice being altered... Apocalypse was a decent villain but not one that I ever knew much about -- he came from the Walt and Louise Simonson X-FACTOR era in the 1980s when I wasn't reading comics. I liked the budding relationship between Scott and Jean, even though it is sad since we know how it ends. There were some humorous asides as well. At one point, some characters were coming out of the movie theater having just watched RETURN OF THE JEDI and arguing over which STAR WARS movie was best and Jean concluded by saying one thing they could all agree on was the third one being the worst... Possibly a dig as X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (2006) which Bryan Singer didn't direct and is considered by many to be the worst in the franchise. Now I just need to watch LOGAN (2017) and DEADPOOL 2 (2018) and I'll be caught up on the FOX X-Men movies.
